Join the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra for its Tenth Season Opener on October 13, 2019, from 3-5 pm at the Everett Civic Auditorium.
Season Openers are always exciting and this will be no exception as the EPO joins forces with the King of Instruments...the organ. Elaine Yale Weltz will be our featured performer at the console.
The concert begins with Edward Elgar's short, dignified piece Sursum Corda(Lift Up Your Hearts), originally written as ceremonial music for a visit by the Duke of York (later King George V) to Worcester Cathedral in 1894. An ensemble of strings, organ, and brass provide a royal welcome to our audience.
The main work will be Camille Saint-Saens Symphony #3, the Organ Symphony. The full orchestra is joined by both piano and organ for a true sound-spectacular...not to be missed! The Symphony grows out of one main theme, which is heard throughout the work in many different moods and keys. What begins as mysterious and questioning ultimately ends in triumph. The composer wrote: "I gave everything to it I was able to give", and we heartily agree.
In between the lush textures of these two pieces will be Haydn's elegant Cello Concerto #2 in D Major. Enjoy the relaxed and lyrical first movement, the simple, peaceful melody of the second, and the virtuoso exertions of the finale. The amazing Nathan Chan will be our cello soloist!
Before the performance, at 2:00 pm, Dr. Paul-Elliott Cobbs will share his insights and anecdotes at the informal and informative Stage Side Chat. Our wonderful soloist may make an appearance for some of his own comments...and you will also be able to get your first choice of seating for the concert!
The Box Office will open at 1:45 pm to facilitate purchasing tickets at the door.
