I and You: October 4 through 20, 2019
I and You: October 4  20, 2019

Written by Lauren Gunderson

Directed by Kelly Kesey

I and You is a two-person show starring Aria Silveira as Caroline and  Oscar Montelongo Medina as Anthony. Aria attends Willits High School and recently acted in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at WCT.  Oscar has performed at SPACE, Ukiah Players Theater, Mendocino College and the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts.

The play is a tribute to youth, life, love and the mystery of human connectedness. It is a searing drama that pries open the shell of pretense to get at the hurt and the hope that lies within us all. It takes the audience through amazing twists and turns, and leaves the viewer re-evaluating the play that they have just seen, pondering the impact of choices they have made, questioning their beliefs and most importantly, holding on to their long-lost dreams. It is not to be missed.

The story:

One afternoon, Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline's door bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitmans Leaves of Grass, with an urgent request for her help with a high school English project. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasnt been to school in months and was not expecting this intrusion. Her quick witted and cynical nature sharply contrasts with Anthony's boy-next-door persona, which creates intense, touching and sometimes hysterical dialogue. As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane school project unlocks the much deeper mystery that has brought them together.

Director Kelly Kesey has been involved in theatre since her teenage years. Her most memorable roles include Angie Graziano in the Mafia comedy Breaking Legs, Melissa Gardner in Love letters, Kitty Fleming in The Angel of Chatham Square, Glorie in Grace and Glorie and all three female roles  Elaine Navazio, Bobbi Michele and Jeanette Fisher  in Neil Simons late 60s comedy, The Last of the Red Hot Lovers. This show will be Kellys first venture into the role of Director.

I and You is one of the more powerful plays written by San Francisco playwright Lauren Gunderson, who, although she has not yet reached her fortieth birthday, has already had more than twenty works produced. According to Wikipedia, Gunderson is currently recognized as Americas most produced living playwright.

Her work includes witty historical dramas about women in science (Emilie, Silent Sky, Ada and the Engine), political comedies (Exit, Pursued by a Bear, The Taming, The Revolutionists), and poetic explorations of death and legacy, such as The Book of Will and this offering by the Willits Community Theatre.

I and You opens October 4, and in addition will play October 5, 10,11, 12 and 13, and 17, 18, 19 and 20. Evening shows are at 7:30; Sunday shows at 2 p.m.; the show on Thursday October 10 is a fundraiser supporting the William F. Harrah Senior Center; for tickets to that show call Pat Collins at 459-4594.

First Saturday October 5th will be our Annual Donors Gala Performance.

Our treasured Donors will enjoy a performance just for them, with free admission, and first choice of reserved seating.
