South Shore Theatre Experience presents Valium is my Favorite Color - a concert
Valium is My Favorite Color
a concert to benefit the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Out of the Darkness Community Walks

August 11, 2019 at 3pm
ALL TICKETS $20

Hosted by Mary Ann Cafiero & Rita Sarli
Starring the cast from Next to Normal
Joseph Bebry, Michael Blangiforti, Jeff Tierney & Zach Zain

This event came together when our cast of
Next to Normal (Show dates Sept. 6 - 21)
wanted to do a concert for people who suffer from mental illness and donate the proceeds to a charity that helps.

Enter Corinne Saar, she walks every year for the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, who reached out when she heard we were doing Next to Normal. She wanted to know if there was any way we could help with a fundraiser for her walk this year.

Corinne Saar:
"On March 2, 1987 while me and my brother were both asleep, our mother succumbed to suicide. I was 7 years old and my brother was 6 years old. My mother was only 34 years old. She did all of the things a typical mom would do to take care of us including reading us stories before bed, teaching us to be polite and the right way to treat others, she was active in the P.T.A. and loved spending time with family and friends. You would never have known she was sick until the very end...We believe she had depression and possible manic depression, never diagnosed because she refused to go to the doctor and get help, but had all of the textbook symptoms of depression and mania.
In 2012, a month after my 34th birthday, I was diagnosed with
Bi Polar-Depression and had attempted suicide twice. I went from myself to manic to completely depressed. Once I became overcome with depression, I was a SHELL of a person. People wondered what was wrong with me, as I was always outgoing and cheerful, I gradually became withdrawn and quiet. Looking back it was a scary time for everyone, especially for my dad, and my stepmom (for my father history was sadly repeating itself) and my close friends as well. One day in 2012, a good friend talked me into seeing a counselor at an outpatient facility, where they told me that I could go to the hospital and get help. Earlier that very same day, as I recall, I was trying to figure out a way to end my life once again. So later on that day, on September 24, 2012 I took the first steps of signing myself over to the doctors and specialists for drug treatments, counseling, recreation therapy, and many other things to start helping me, get back to my NORMAL self ...
See, a lot of people dont realize this, but mental illness IS a disease just like if you have cancer or diabetes and dont take steps to control it or fight it: you could die.
I walk in memory of my mother and the countless others who have succumbed to suicide. I walk for the those who have attempted suicide, and know what it is like to live with depression and other mental illnesses so I am able to make everyone aware that they are not alone, and an organization like AFSP is there for support and offers lots of ways to get the very same help that I was able to receive.

This is how this event came about.
