Concert #1 LES BORÉADES de Montréal

Friday Sept 27, 2019, 7:30pm, Brunton Auditorium: Two concerts for the price of one! Indeed, Suzie LeBlanc and Les Boréades de Montreal invites us to two 18th century music evenings.
First, we will hear the dramatic Orphée cantata by Clérambault, in a Parisian salon setting. We will then move on to Scotland with its fascinating traditional music that has attracted many musicians to the British Isles, from Geminiani to Haydn.
Works by Clérambault, Leclair, Barsanti, Geminiani and Haydn

Concert #2 Ensemble Caprice with Constantinople

Saturday Sept 28, 2019, 7:30pm, Brunton Auditorium: Caprice Ensemble with Constantinople, Près du soleil. The Ars subtilior, a musically complex and refined style following the Ars Nova of the Middle Ages, is the starting point of a meeting between the universes of Ensemble Caprice and Constantinople. The Près du soleil (Near the Sun) programme unfolds in eight segments and can be compared with a series of paintings that the musicians create while being guided by the cycle of the sun in the Middle Ages. From night to dawn, from the moment when the sun is at its zenith until dusk, the themes played and sung will transport the public through time and space.
In this original musical program, the oriental instruments of Constantinople (sétar, kanun, oud and percussion) mix with the sounds of the Ensemble Caprice (recorders and viols) as well as with the voices of the sopranoRebecca Dowd and Persian singer Kiya Tabassian in a dialogue that blends European and Oriental medieval colors. Repertoire: Llibre Vermell, Matteo di Perugia, Johannes Ciconia and others.

Concert #3 David Greenberg and David McGuinness

Sunday, Sept 23, 2018, 3:00pm, Brunton Auditorium: David Greenberg and David McGuinness, Fall Any Day Now. Today, we usually see early music as part of what we now call classical music, but in the baroque era the music was home to all kinds of influences, including local traditions and the cutting edge of composition and creativity.
David Greenberg and David McGuinness pay tribute to this diversity in a high-energy exploration that respectfully traverses musical genres, and shows the sometimes-surprising relationships between musical traditions. The audience member will be awash with violin virtuosity from the D minor Partita by J.S. Bach, Georg Muffats wonderfully twisty violin sonata, and the uncompromisingly powerful personality of 18th-century Scot Robert Red Rob Mackintosh, both in his fiddle tunes and in an outrageously showy sonata. More fiddle tunes from the early printed collections of Robert Bremner rub shoulders with tunes from contemporary genre-hoppers including the Finnish musical polymath Timo Alakotila and improvisation guru Fred Frith, as well as music by the two Davids themselves.
