10th Anniversary Grand Victorian Homes Tour of Vallejo
The closing highlight of the Mad Hatter Holiday Season is the Grand Victorian Homes Tour. Celebrating its tenth year anniversary, it will be filled with added surprises. Santa and the Hatter will be at the buffet reception at the USA World Classic Car Museum on Sonoma Blvd. Tables will be surrounded by classic Rolls and Bentleys, while guests enjoy themselves with some food, a class of wine and desserts while listening to live holiday music and placing your thoughts on our Tree of Hope.
Then be prepared to tour seven outstanding homes, some have been designated as historical residences, landmarks inspiring many students of architecture. Others built by Mare Island ship makers and some commissioned by the successful merchants in the downtown that profited from the financial rewards of the 40,000 plus sailors working on Mare Island.
Vallejo has had many famous and infamous residents throughout the years, actors Raymond Burr and Boris Karloff, sports great Tug McGraw and the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, once married to an officer on Mare Island. Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor once attended a banquet at one of the elaborate Colonial Revival homes on Georgia Street in the designated Architectural Historic District. On the tour many of the interesting stories about the houses landowners and occupants from the 1800s are revealed by the proprietors in residence. The Grand Victorian Home Tour has a number of repeat visitors and many come from outlining cities to celebrate a charming old fashioned Christmas going from home to home to experience a tradition enjoyed by generations of families during the holidays a wonderful way to celebrate the season.
From the reception to the self-guided tour it is a good ole fashion holiday taking guests through the Victorian era, people are warmly greeted by some hosts in period costumes, telling of the historical findings, and providing holiday delights at every turn. The ending of the tour has several after events that guests are invited to as well on Mare Island: The Mare Island Art Studios that is housed in Building 515, a corrugated-steel foot structure built in 1941, once a service shop for the submarine base on the former Navy shipyard, there will be added refreshments, music, and a wonderful display of art and ceramics created by local artists.
Continuing down the Wet Mile on Mare Island from the Arts Studios will be Savage & Cooke Distillery open for our visitors, which offers tastings in its two-story brick buildings where spirits are aged and produced. The building was designed by Calvin Brown during the first of his two assignments as a civil engineer for Mare Island Naval Shipyard then ending at Godfather Winery one of the Officers Mansions for the after party. This will be an experience to cherish for years to come - not to be missed!
From the festive Reception to the After-party at one of the Officers mansions on Mare Island, currently Vino Godfather Winery, it is a wonderful way to celebrate a Victorian holiday.
The 2:30-4:30pm Reception for the Tour will be hosted by Vino Godfather -- with live music & a variety of food from Vallejo merchants -- at the historic building at 1521 Sonoma Boulevard in Vallejo that is now the USA World Classic Car Museum. It is home to the Batmobile and other fun cars that you will be able to see during the Reception.
