Celtic Community Night with Corner House
Connecting Celtic Appreciators in Portland
PORTLAND CELTIC COMMUNITY NIGHT
Second Wednesday every month.
The goal is simple: Create a stronger, vibrant, and more unified community of Celtic musicians, dancers, and artists, and appreciators within the Portland, Oregon region. By hosting evenings that include performances by local and regional bands and artists, followed by an open traditional music and dance session, we can help foster a fun and inclusive environment where everyone can appreciate and participate in Celtic culture.
Corner House is a meeting place for friends who share a passion for the dance music of Ireland. With a line-up that includes flutes, uilleann pipes, fiddle, whistle and piano, expect to have your feet tapping. The Corner House sound is lively and handy and represents a variety of styles.
Channing Dodson started learning Scottish pipes as a teenager in California, studying with Jay Salter, P/M Jimmy McColl, and Allan MacDonald of Glenuig. Whistle and then flute soon followed. During a summer in West Kerry, a set of uilleann pipes came into his hands, and he's been wrestling with them ever since. Initially starting off with help from Kerry pipers Eoin Duignan and the late, great Con Durham, Channing has been fortunate to receive tuition from some of Ireland and America's finest pipers, including Eoin Ó Riabhaigh, Eliot Grasso, Tom Creegan, and David Power. When he's not playing Irish or Scottish tunes, he recently took up the Arabic and Turkish oud, which has been a mind-expanding and gloriously refreshing source of frustration compared with the pipes.
While classically trained, Gordo Freemans fiddling draws more from the rowdy old time and Irish music that captured his ears and heart at a young age. He is a past member of The No Name String Band with whom he opened for the Del McCoury Band. Current projects include Outbound Traveler with Jake Grieco and Richie Rosencrans.
Jake Grieco has been performing traditional music for dances, pub audiences and events for 15 years. Hailing from Vermont and exposed from an early age to the lively folk music scene there, he took to playing Irish flute, DADGAD guitar, and folk singing in his late teens. A Portland resident since 2010, Jake collaborates regularly in sessions and performances. Current projects include Outbound Traveler, a trio whose music spans traditional and contemporary folk traditions from the Appalachians to the British Isles; The Lads, a lively traditional Irish quartet, and Hills & Hollows, which brings together Celtic song and tunes in a mystical and heartfelt way.
Teresa Baker plays tin whistle and piano in as many ensembles as possible.
