An Early Morning ADA/Accessibility Program- Adventure Playground Irvine
A re-imaged park for the City of Irvine, the focus was on ADA accessibility for playground equipment and park experience, rainwater management, and landscape that educates visitors on native resources and experimentation for use of materials.

1. Attendees will experience how to include ADA accessible requirements, including landscape as enhancements to parks and outdoor settings within their projects.

2. Attendees will experience how ADA accessible equipment is incorporated into playgrounds and pathways.

3. Attendees will learn how to incorporate unique design features into their projects that also comply with ADA accessibility requirements.

4. Attendees will learn about designing for onsite rainwater management to reduce sediment loads impacting adjacent sites and the Newport Bay and how similar designs can be incorporated into their projects.

The City of Irvine brought us on board to lead an intensive participatory design process guiding the community to re-imagine a revitalized and ADA-accessible Adventure Playground. The community wanted the beloved playground to hold on to its free spirit, while the City needed to meet stricter new environmental, health and accessibility codes. The new plan features play structures, climbing poles and stumps, art wall, boulders and plenty of trees and large shrubs to give kids new places to explore. Willows, grasses and reeds provide natural building materials for kids to experiment making crafts and building huts like those that sheltered the regions native people. Medicinal, edible and native plants can educate visitors on the regions bountiful natural and cultural resources while providing habitat for wildlife. Repurposed shipping containers are now the park restrooms and administrative offices. Designed with the intent of continuous evolution, the park continues to grow and change with every passing year.
