Emma Hill and Meghan Yates at The Firefly Lounge
Emma Hill and Bryan Daste are a folk/Americana duo based in Anchorage, Alaska. Their signature sound is filled with haunting harmonies and sweeping pedal steel. The duo, who have been compared to Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, are set to release their fifth full length album this fall. Entitled Denali, the album was co-produced with Evan Phillips (Whipsaws, Easton Stagger Phillips) of Alaska and features many of the states finest players. In April, Hill and Daste will tour in Alaska with a sneak preview of the upcoming album featuring a poster of the cover art and three downloadable tracks from Denali. In August they will tour extensively in Alaska followed by a nationwide tour in support of the new album.
Emma Hill grew up in Alaska, coming from the small village of Sleetmute and later moving into Palmer for high school. In 2006 Hill decided to move to Portland, a thriving music scene, to continue her education and pursue her musical aspirations. In 2007 Hill met Daste and they began their collaboration. Seven busy years, four widely well-reviewed albums, and thousands of tour miles later, the duo are going strong, bringing remarkably intimate lyrics to life with their poignant harmonies, lonesome pedal steel, and Hills honeyed voice and confident delivery. Critics have described their sound as ranging from folksy Americana to catchy alt-country.
Hill moved back to Alaska in the fall of 2011, combining performing for her fan base in the state with travel south for regional and national tours. She stays busy year round performing solo as well as with Daste both in Alaska and the states. The pair plays various venues but their signature performance experience is the house concert. The intimate setting of a house show lends itself perfectly to their style and will continue to be a staple of their tours this year as they promote Denali, the newest addition to an impressive body of work.

Meghan Yates has been singing and writing songs for a very long time, but her solo career started in 2002 in Portland, ME -- walking past a local club on Congress street, apparently humming loud enough for the club owner to run out, grab her by the arm and ask her to sing right there on the spot for his guests. Stunned and unprepared, she sang an a capella tune she had finished writing earlier that day. The club owner asked if she would be willing to play a real set sometime, so she returned about a month later and sang all of the a capella tunes she could fit into thirty minutes. Eventually, she picked up the guitar and through the support of the local scene in a small port city in Maine, Meghan developed a distinctive guitar playing, songwriting style and performance that captures and often stuns her audiences. She recorded a few solo albums before she Mordechai Rosenblatt, and together they started The Reverie Machine in 2009.
Many wonderful musicians have worked with Meghan Yates, adding to the cultivation of the rich, full sound the band produces. Meghan now lives in the Pacific Northwest (for the milder winters and the mystic landscape) and is re-building her band. Whether solo or with other players, the music created often uplifts, penetrates and inspires the listener.
