"Looking Back" is a Charlotte Repertory Dance Theatre (CRDT) dance presentation which will premiere dance pieces choreographed by the artistic director, VCarr. The multiple styles of dance presented will include contemporary ballet/modern/jazz, Broadway and Negro Spiritual. The choreographic content will explore expressions of emotion and controversy, a release of negative energy, and the delight of jubilant soulful movement. The presentation will be a representation of the choreographer's experiences and training with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, Frank Hatchett, Katherine Dunham, and Gene Kelly. This performance is a tribute, born out of the choreographers treasured childhood memories, transcending barriers and appealing to multiple groups and ethnicities.
At 16, the Artistic Director for Charlotte Repertory Dance Theatre was accepted into the North Carolina School of the Arts, received a scholarship with Dance Theater of Harlem, and attended the North Carolina Governor's School, in dance, two consecutive years. After receiving her Master's Degree in Dance Education, she taught Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Broadway, African, and Folk in Universities across the country. She produced theatrical dance concerts as Artistic Director, coached collegiate and professional (NFL & NBA) cheerleading and dance teams, taught physical fitness & wellness, was a choreographer and stage manager in community theaters, and started her Doctorate in Sports Medicine. In NC, she taught at the Winston-Salem Arts Center, UNCC, Children's Theater, Spirit Square, and served on the NC Arts Council. Her dance training includes Alvin Ailey, Arthur Mitchell, Tokyo Balled, Chicago Ballet, George Faison, Frank Hatchett, Pilobolus, Nicolai, Graham, Taylor, and Cunningham.
