The 14th Annual San Francisco Electronic Music Festival is proud to offer four evenings of stimulating performances by internationally recognized composers, performers, and audio artists in the electronic music field. This year's lineup includes a wide array of electronic music pioneers, modern innovators, and emerging artists, ranging in diverse styles from noise to sound sculpture, free improvisation, ensemble composition, avant pop music, and video art. The featured artists utilize instruments such as analog synthesizers, home-brewed electronics, acoustic instruments and laptop patches.
ON THE MAIN STAGE, SEPTEMBER 13-15 SFEMF has invited a distinctive group of artists from across the field of electronic music: German sound-color experimentalist Thomas Köner, French guitar/electronics innovator Richard Pinhas, analog duo Benjamin Ethan Tinker & Nick Wang, noise artist Raven Chacon from New Mexico, instrument builder Ashley Bellouin, video and sound duo Joshua Churchill & John Davis, and oboe/trumpet/electronics duo EKG (Kyle Bruckmann, Ernst Carel) with video by Bill Hsu. World premieres will include a new work "OCAM IX" by French electronic music pioneer Eleanor Radigue composed for Laetitia Sonami's Digital Spring Spyre instrument, and an electronic ensemble composition by Bay Area percussionist/conductor Moe! Staiano for audio generators and piccolos. This year SFEMF is excited to present two auxiliary events: THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 12: NIGHTLIFE AT CAL ACADEMY SFEMF takes over multiple rooms at the California Academy of Sciences' weekly NightLife event with performances by Italian pianist/installation artist Mario Bertoncini (performing his xxx), and LA-based live electronics duo Lucky Dragons, plus water-inspired works by Mills College's Maggi Payne in the Steinhart Aquarium Coral Reef Gallery, and hands-on interactive presentations by instrument designers Donald Swearingen and Cheryl Leonard. DJs Kit Clayton, Geeta Dayal and Dominique Leone will spin tracks throughout the evening. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14: "ART OF NOISES" PANEL DISCUSSION (prior to concert) To celebrate the centennial of the publication of Italian Futurist Luigi Russolo's 1913 manifesto "The Art of Noises" -- proposing a new industry-influenced approach to music composition -- SFEMF will host a panel discussion with Russolo scholar Luciano Chessa, performer Thomas Köner and others, moderated by journalist Geeta Dayal.
