Improv Intensives with Colleen Doyle and Jason Shotts of Dummy
As BETA gears up for our "Duos" BETA Bracket this summer, we are very excited to bring Colleen Doyle and Jason Shotts to Houston once again for a weekend of intensives focusing on 2 person improv and grounded scene work. You may know them from their world renowned duo, Dummy!

Jason's intensive is called "The Two Person Show," and Colleen's is "Get Real" (Descriptions Below). Because we want everyone in Houston to be able to soak up all their knowledge and wisdom, they are offering both 6 hour intensives each day. Gone are the days of having to pick and choose which workshop to attend, or worse, which you have to miss.

ALSO Registration to "BOTH INTENSIVES" includes tickets to their show (date/time tbd but it'll be that weekend)

THE TWO PERSON SHOW (Jason Shotts)
Saturday or Sunday
10am - 1pm and 2pm -5pm

This intensive workshop will be focused on the building blocks and execution of a two-person show. In this class we will be putting relationship and point of view front and center to build a rich and satisfying longform show. We will start with the basic tenets of a great two-person scene: making specific choices, listening hard for opportunities to react hard, speaking and behaving like human beings, bringing more of our own beliefs and experiences to the stage, knowing your character's point of view, discovering how the characters relate to each other, and playing with emotion.

Then we will tackle how to play multiple characters to heighten the stakes and drive reactions, playing your scene partner's characters by making and recognizing clear physical and emotional choices, making and recognizing internal edits, and heightening and exploring all the true things we have to drive towards a clear and satisfying end to your show. Attendees will receive loads of personal feedback as well as the experience of working long scenes and doing mini shows with notes.

GET REAL (Colleen Doyle)
Saturday or Sunday
10am - 1pm and 2pm -5pm

A common trait of improvisers who create scenes and shows they-and the audience-enjoy is playing from a relaxed and confident place. A way for us to feel more relaxed on stage is to understand what's happening. Improv pushes players toward the weird, but when things get too crazy improvising becomes more effort with less reward. We'll work on scenes grounded in reality, bringing more of who you are to your scenes and trusting that the audience's recognition of shared human experiences and points of view is entertaining and funny. We'll address weird initiations, characters, and scenarios to work on embracing them while making other elements of the scene understood. Finally, we'll delve into how to heighten the things we've made true to create fun and funny longform pieces.

TESTIMONIALS

"He was one of my favorite teachers at iO and this was by far my favorite workshop I have ever taken."
Cassandra P.

"He makes difficult scene work seem easy in a fun and supportive environment. If you want to become a better improvisor, then take a workshop with Jason."
Walt D.

"After a workshop with him you'll spend more time in your scenes actually improvising instead of trying desperately to figure out what's going on."
Alex H.

"If Improv was a martial art, Mr. Shotts is what you'd call a Grandmaster. His technique is a serious workout. Bring all your attention, a pen and a lot of paper."
Joe

"I have attended many improv workshops and classes but Colleen helped me wrap my head around bringing a strong point of view to a scene and using my gut instead of my head as my guide. She is a great instructor and hilarious to boot!"
Peggy

"Colleen was so my "up ass" in that workshop. She really made a lasting impression. I would highly reccomend letting her "get up your ass." Take her workshop. You won't regret it."
Jason C.
