Michael Morgan Presents ... Bill Kalinkos, clarinet
FOLKLORIC showcases composers links with various human cultural histories. From Stravinsky, who borrowed melodies from Russian folk song and early American jazz, to Caleb Burhans Joy Division-embracing ballad and Chen Yis haunting monologue inspired by the writings of Lu Xun, this recital will highlight the versatility and expressive voice of the clarinet. The program also includes works by Miklós Rósza, Don Byron, Roberto Sierra, and JS Bach.

Bill Kalinkos, principal clarinet of the Oakland Symphony, has been called "a powerhouse" (San Francisco Chronicle), "a superb performer" (San Jose Mercury News), and his playing has been lauded as "ethereal, yet grounded" (Oakland Tribune). His performance of Aaron Copland's Concerto was praised in the Oakland Tribune: "Kalinkos played casually, with the mysterious ease one hears in an accomplished musician."

Bill enjoys a diverse musical career as a member of critically acclaimed groups such as Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble Signal, Deviant Septet, and Splinter Reeds. Recognized by the Washington Post as a "notable contemporary music specialist," he has been fortunate enough to work with and premiere pieces by many renowned composers. Bill recently performed Yann Robins Art of Metal II for solo contrabass clarinet and electronics on the New York Philharmonics Nightcap series. As an orchestral player, he is also a member of both IRIS Orchestra and the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, and he has performed with The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, and the Kansas City Symphony. Bill has served on the faculties of the University of Missouri and the University of California at Santa Cruz and Berkeley. As a recording artist, he can be heard on the Cantaloupe, Nonesuch, Euroarts, Naxos, Mode, Orange Mountain, Albany Records, Deutsche Gramophon, and Harmonia Mundi labels.

Described as "brilliant" by the San Francisco Classical Voice, pianist Allegra Chapman is dedicated to engaging with new audiences as performer, presenter, and educator. She is founding artistic codirector and executive director of Bard Music West, a new San Francisco music festival that explores the worlds of contemporary and twentieth-century composers. Her performances have been broadcast on WQXR New York, WFMT Chicago, and KALW San Francisco. Performance highlights include Alice Tully Hall, he Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, and festivals including New York City Centers Fall for Dance, and the Aspen, Bard, and Kneisel music festivals. She has collaborated with renowned artists including members of International Contemporary Ensemble and the Eusebius, Orion, and Telegraph String Quartets, and worked with Charles Wuorinen and Joan Tower, among many other living composers. She performs regularly with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and UC Berkeleys Eco Ensemble. Allegra is currently a faculty member at MTSY Studio in Xian China and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Musics Pre-College division. Allegra studied with Jeremy Denk and Peter Serkin at the Bard College Conservatory of Music, and with Seymour Lipkin and Julian Martin at The Juilliard School..
