Bruce Molsky Concert: (8pm, doors open at 7:30)
Bruce Molsky is "one of America's premier fiddling talents" (Mother Jones) and twice Grammy nominated artist on fiddle, banjo, guitar and song. His new collaboration with Anonymous 4, "1865 Songs of Hope and Home from the American Civil War, has just been released to rave reviews. Bruce is also a special guest on legend rocker Mark Knopflers brand new CD, "Tracker" and will be recording his 3rd album with Andy Irvine & Donal Lunny's supergroup Mozaik this fall. No Depression called Bruces most recent solo CD If It Aint Here When I Get Back, an album from an absolute master. Bruce is also Berklee College of Music's Visiting Scholar in the American Roots Program, and is the go-to guy for the next generation of fiddlers.
Bruce Molsky is one of the most revered multi-hyphenated career ambassadors for Americas old-time mountain music. For decades, hes been a globetrotting performer and educator, a recording artist with an expansive discography including seven solo albums, well over a dozen collaborations and two Grammy-nominations. Hes also the classic musicians musician a man whos received high praise from diverse fans and collaborators like Linda Ronstadt, Mark Knopfler, Celtic giants Donal Lunny and Andy Irvine, jazzer Bill Frisell and dobro master Jerry Douglas, a true country gentleman by way of the Big Apple aptly dubbed the Rembrandt of Appalachian fiddlers by virtuoso violinist and sometimes bandmate Darol Anger. Molsky digs deep to transport audiences to another time and place, with his authentic feel for and the unearthing of almost-forgotten rarities from the Southern Appalachian songbook. His foils are not only his well-regarded fiddle work, but banjo, guitar and his distinctly resonant vocals. From tiny folk taverns in the British Isles to huge festival stages to his ongoing workshops at the renowned Berklee College of Music, Molsky seduces audiences with a combination of rhythmic and melodic virtuosity and relaxed conversational wit a uniquely humanistic, downhome approach that can make Carnegie Hall feel like a front porch or parlor jam session. "There's an incredible power of history and tradition in his vocals." -Linda Ronstadt
Workshop (3-5pm): -"Well take a fun and intense hands-on approach in Bruces old time fiddle workshop. Tunes are taught a phrase at a time, first melody, then bowing, and then piecing things together. We'll dig into old-time music's unique phrasing, rhythm and syncopation, intonation, etc. The tune is the vehicle, so mostly we'll be playing! If enough folks are interested, we can also spend some time working on singing with the fiddle.
-Bring a recorder or smartphone. Since developing ear training skills is one of the workshop goals, written music will not be provided.
-Suggested experience level: If you have at least a small repertoire of tunes and feel reasonably comfortable on the fiddle, then you'll be fine.
