Twangville (www.twangville.com) began humbly as a place to post playlists for our friends. It wasn't long before we expanded to feature reviews of new releases plus downloads, videos and more. In search of twang, we typically look beyond traditional and mainstream country into genres like americana, alt-country, indie, rock, folk and blues.
Twangville. Because spoon-fed music sucks and twang is cheaper than therapy. Est. 2005.
The Twangville Posse They've got writers across the United States like to get together from time to time to, well, talk music. This year they're gathering near Boston and you're invited to the party!
Twangville will be taking over the Lizard Lounge on June 28th and 29th for an incredible weekend of music. How's this for a killer line-up:
SESSION AMERICANA, BILL JANOVITZ and KEVIN GORDON
Session Americana (Boston) is a rock band in a tea cup, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle. This band/collective of talented musicians craft an musical experience unlike any other. On stage is a collapsible bar table wired with microphones, a vintage suitcase recast as a kick drum, an old Estey field organ, a pre-war parlor guitar, a mandocello and all of its smaller siblings, a harmonica case fire damaged when Jack's bar went up in flames and graffitied by Depeche Mode roadies, and an assortment of other instruments that get passed around in this freewheeling modern hootenanny. The anything-could-happen feel of a Session show depends on craft that's not accidental or easilywon; they bring a kind of ease and genuineness to this timeless music, sometimes presenting the latest batch of original songs, sometimes reaching back into depths of the American "song bag".
Session Americana is an absolute must-see, must-hear.
Says David Greenberger of NPR:"I'd give them 100 miles. That is to say, if they're playing anywhere within 100 miles of your home, you drive there and are grandly rewarded for your effort."
After ten years in the business, Kevin Gordon has had time to hone his craft. Each of his four records shows his attention to detail and background in writing. He graduated from the elite Iowa Writer's Workshop in poetry. His songs are highly literature and story centered. At times they devolve into straight up stories. They'realways engaging either as stories or as melodies.
So that's why we're so excited to see him at the Twangville festival at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge. Not only has he prove his writing chops, but his melodies aren't too shabby either.
BILL JANOVITZ is best known as the singer and guitarist of the alternative rock band Buffalo Tom. He is currently finishing up work on a solo record entitled Walt Whitman Mall. For more - read on:
In 1997, Janovitz released the solo album Lonesome Billy, with help from Joey Burns and John Convertino of Giant Sand and Calexico.
During Buffalo Tom's long hiatus after Smitten in 1998, Bill worked with keyboardist Phil Aiken and Chris Toppin and released the album Up Here in 2001.
He continued to work with Aiken and released the album Fireworks on TV! as Crown Victoria (also including Tom Polce on drums and Josh Lattanzi on bass) in 2004.
Bill took many of the songs he wrote with his bar-band/side project The Bathing Beauties with Dean Fisher, Chris Toppin, Paul Kolderie, Phil Aiken, and Mike Leahy and put out a CD of most of the band's songs and others under the name Show People, with Toppin.
Beginning in November 2008, Bill, as part of his Part Time Man of Rock blog, started a Cover of the Week project, featuring new recording of cover songs along with lengthy essays detailing his relationship with each of the songs. Some of these articles detail Bill's career in music, but many connect deeply to his personal life.
Buffalo Tom released two more records, Three Easy Pieces in 2007 and Skins in 2010. They continue to play and record whenever they can regroup.
Bill's second book about the Rolling Stones is due out summer 2013 with St. Martin's Press. It's titled, It's Only Rock 'n' Roll: 50 Tracks That Tell the Story of the Rolling Stones. His previous book was Exile on Main Street for the 33 1/3 series at Continuum Books.
