Davu Seru and Jamal R. Moore
ALLJazz presents a rare Madison appearance by two acclaimed musicians from todays Black arts avant-garde, drummer Davu Seru (Saint Paul) and multi-instrumentalist Jamal R. Moore (Baltimore), on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 8pm. The artists will host a discussion on black cultural praxis after the performance.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. College/university/high school students receive a $5 discount on either price (valid student ID must be presented at the door - no exceptions). Advance tickets are available online until one hour before the performance. Doors open at 7:30PM.

About the Musicians
St. Paul-based multidisciplinarian Davu Seru has worked with numerous improvising musicians and composers throughout the United States and France. He is composer, drummer and bandleader for No Territory Band and a member of Trio SDS with French musicians Guilluame Seguron and Catherine Delaunay and Black Praxis Band with Chicago-based musicians David Boykin and Eliel Sherman Storey. He spent his formative years in Chicago among musicians of the Associated Advancement of Creative Musician (AACM) and in with Minneapolis-based avant-garde jazz legend Milo Fine. For the year 2017-2018 he served as the first-ever composer-in-residence at Studio Z in Saint Paul. Davu has also received awards from the Jerome Foundation (2017-18 Composer/Sound Artist Fellow), American Composers Forum (Minnesota Emerging Composer Award), the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (Next Step Fund) and has received commissions from the Zeitgeist Ensemble and Walker Art Center. In addition to his musical pursuits, Davu is a published author and a professor of English and African American literature and culture at Hamline University.

Jamal R. Moore is a native of Baltimore Maryland whom is a multi-instrumentalist, composer/performer and educator. His background include California Institute of The Arts (M.F.A. 2012), Berklee College of Music (B.M 2005), Eubie Blake Jazz Orchestra (2000) under the direction of Christopher Calloway Brooks and historical acclaimed Frederick Douglass Sr. High whom notable alumni Thurgood Marshall, Cab Calloway, and Ethel Ennis graduated from. Some notable luminaries Jamal has worked with are Wadada Leo Smith (2013 Pulitzer finalist) whom he studied with at California Institute of The Arts, Nicole Mitchell, Sabir Mateen, Roscoe Mitchell, David Ornette Cherry (Organic Roots Nation), Tomeka Reid, Dr. Bill Cole, DJ Lou Gorbea, George Duke, Sheila E, David Murray, JD Parran, Ras Moshe, Tatsua Nakatani, Hamid Drake and Yahyah Abdul Majid (Sun Ra Arkestra). He is a long-term member of KREation and Conference of The Birds ensembles directed by Kevin Robinson. A affiliate of The Pan African Peoples Arkestra of the late Horace Tapscott, Calvin Gant ensemble directed by Calvin Gant and Nicole Mitchell; Joyful Noise Band, and co-creator of Ancestral Duo with Luke Stewart.

Jamal currently leads his own groups, Akebulan Arkestra, Napata Strings, Black Elements Quartet, Organix Trio, and Interstellar Duo.
