Natacha stepped into her French grandmother's kitchen in the hope of a birthday present. But the gift-wrapped box on the windowsill was only the latest salvo of a multi-generational battle--and Natacha found herself on the front lines. It would take a submarine disaster, the songs of Edith Piaf, and countless pounds of chocolate to bring its last two opponents to a final detente.

On that sweltering summer night in 1972, the last thing I wanted to deal with was Papa barging into my room. He had found out I appeared on TV the night before to debate an aversion therapist who was "curing" queers by zapping them with electricity. How could I explain it to him? He couldn't understand long hair or folk music, let alone the fact that I was queer and proud of it. This wasn't going to end well.
