AWIS Palo Alto chapter invites you to learn about our non-profit and how we (and YOU!) can support women in STEM.
Current members will share their experiences at this unique panel.
Ermelinda Porpiglia is an Academic Scientist at Stanford University, in the field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. She holds a BS/MS degree in Medical Biotechnology from the University of Bologna Medical School, Italy, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Ermelinda is a passionate advocate for women scientists. She has been an active member of AWIS Palo Alto since 2013. She started volunteering as Programs Co-chair and devoted her efforts on developing an innovative program, focused on career development and career transition. She assumed the Chapter Presidency in 2016 and reshaped the board by recruiting members of the technology and business industry. In the past few years she expanded the partnership with local tech and biotech companies in the South Bay to provide an added benefit to our members.
Katy Korsmeyers career started at UCLA on pyruvate dehydrogenase. At the University of Texas at Austin, she studied structure-function of flavin-containing monooxygenase. Katy focused on post-translational modifications of cytochrome P-450s during her postdoctoral fellowship at UCSF.
Volunteering with UCSFs Science and Health Education Partnership (SEP) Triad Project started Katys passion for STEM outreach and enhance science in the classrooms. She volunteers on the AWIS National Chapters Committee, AWIS Northern CA Chapters Committee, volunteers on the board of the local Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association, and the board of Teach Biotech helping to run the non-profit for local educators to provide training and mobile biotech curricular labs to schools. Other programs of Teach Biotech are an annual DNA Day Art and Video Contest, Educator Giveaways to recycle excess industry equipment and consumables for educational use, and Silicon Valley STEM Internship program for high school students. Teach Biotech is housed at Santa Clara University (SCU) where she teaches a STEM Education & Social Justice course. Currently, she also works at SCU in the College of Arts and Sciences Deans Offices as the Director of Special Projects.
Susan Bernhard has worked for over 30 years in the Bay Area biopharmaceutical industry and recently retired from Gilead Sciences, RA-CMC. She has worked for small, mid-size and large global companies in the Bay Area, at the bench in research and development, and in management roles. Her experience encompasses hands-on preclinical bench research in immuno-oncology (XOMA Corp), downstream process and assay development lab supporting biologics manufacturing (Baxter Healthcare), pharmaceutical development technical affairs (Elan Pharmaceuticals), and Regulatory Affairs-CMC (Gilead Sciences).
Most recently at Gilead in Foster City, Susan managed a small regulatory affairs group, and worked with product teams to prepare CMC submissions, both new filings and manufacturing changes, for drug molecules in early and later stage clinical development and marketed products.
For the past 20+ years, Susan has volunteered for the Association for Women In Science (AWIS-Palo Alto Chapter). She has held several positions on the AWIS Palo Alto Chapter Board, including co-Chair of Programs (95-97), President (97-99), co-Chair of Mentoring (00-10). Susan continues as a volunteer mentor for AWIS, and has been a mentor for WILS (Women in Life Science at UCSF), and HBA (Healthcare Businesswomens Association). Mentoring continues to be an important focus and interest in Susans life.
