Color Essentials in Landscapes
Artist Carlene Salzar will focus on focus on how color affects a painting, and how to make the best choices for specific effects.

Bring your favorite media and Carlene will assist you in making your landscapes sing.

Color Essentials in Landscape Painting

You will learn about the color spectrum, how it relates to color in the landscape, and how to apply it in painting.

What is covered:

1. First well cover the light spectrum, and how is perceived in the landscape.
a. You will develop a graded scale with 5 steps from white to black.
b. You will compare your scale to a provided neutral example.
c. We will discuss what you find and why.
2. Next well cover the color wheel and how it related to the light spectrum.
a. You will develop several colors by mixing paint on your pallet to give you an understanding of the relationships in a painting medium.
b. You will experiment around with different color mixes to achieve different effects for light and dark colors.
c. We will discuss what is achieved, and its effectiveness.
3. Finally, well compare the samples you make with actual images in several art magazines and painting images.
4. There will be an open question and answer session with me and fellow artists, at the end of the instruction. You will take your sample pieces home to use as references.

What you will need:

1. A small selection of paint in your favorite medium.
a. Crimson Red (NOT alizarin  its too blue for this)
b. Bright Yellow (either a cadmium or lemon are good choices)
c. Ultramarine blue (or similar)
d. Black (mars black a good one)
e. Titanium white (Not zinc white or a lead-based white) (Watercolour doesnt need white  and there are some different challenges, but the color swatches are to teach about mixing and the relation to contrast)
f. Mixing medium: Oil painters bring whatever you usually use (turpentine, turpenoid, or other), Acrylic painters, either an acrylic medium or water, water for Watercolourists, and none for soft pastelists
g. Also bring a few brushes, suitable for your medium, in either filbert or flat, with an approximate with of  inch, and your favorite palette. (Not applicable for soft pastel)
h. Artists can use small pieces (5x7) of primed canvas, canvas board, watercolor paper, or pastel paper. Whatever you normally use for your medium.
i. Dont forget rags etc. for clean-up.
