Mark Jackson: why devise?

Local theater maker Mark Jackson will lead a discussion about key international artists whose work exemplifies the underlying impulse shared by the diverse range of "devised" theater and performance makers: to think in new ways, to rigorously question expectation, and to explore the open range of possibilities in art. How do these questions relate to Bay Area artists?

In this era of momentous political, social, and economic change, theater and performing artists are searching for significant new ways to make work, and new aesthetic forms for that work to take. What does this artistic searching, and the processes and performances it yields, say about our ethics and what we value? How do our creative processes and the performances that result embody, speak, and respond to the world in which we're living? As artists, what is our right to make work? As audiences, what is our right to see and respond to work? As colleagues, what is our right, and our responsibility, to discuss each others' work?

About the Instructor:
Mark Jackson is a San Francisco based theater maker. His work has been seen at Art Street Theatre, Aurora Theatre Company, Encore Theatre Company, EXIT Theatre, Potrzebie Dance Project, San Francisco International Arts Festival, Shotgun Players, Z Space, The Catamounts (Denver), and The Studio Theatre (Washington D.C.), among others; as well as internationally at Arts International Festival IV (Japan), Edinburgh Festival Fringe (UK), and Deutsches Theater Berlin (Germany). www.artstreettheatre.org
