ReBelle at Stone Church with Ras Daniel Rosow
ReBelle is a skilled and seasoned band with high profile touring experience in West Africa, across the United States, and an immense capacity to connect with live audiences wherever they perform. They are gentle insurgents, fueled by vision of justice.
In their music and their lives, Rebelle is an intergenerational and intercultural band from Africa and America. The Rebelle story is rich in a foundation of love and powerful musicianship. ReBelle came together when Kalpana Devi and Emmanuel Manou first joined creative forces performing, recording, composing, and touring together in 1994. They completed 4 full length albums between 93 and 2008, and released many singles including, Free Mumia, Move Together, War is Not the Answer and countless acoustic works. ReBelle plays all original music, sung in many languages including Wolof, French, Creole, English, Sanskrit and Arabic. Their lyrical content melts barriers of hate; conscious sound bites explode points of view and inform new perspectives. ReBelle plays Roots reggae music, and its powerhouse vocalists chant meditations on liberation while the band propels roots reggae soul. The bands mystical mix of pulsing tribal rhythms, guitar and tight harmonies is internationally acclaimed. In Africa, performances at the Blaise Senghor Institute in Senegal, Reggae Sunsplash in Senegal and Baia das Gatas Festival in Cape Verde exemplified the bands outstanding success at reaching the hearts and minds of people. At the Baia das Gatas Festival in front of 60,000 people and to an international television audience, the band so moved the people that the audience rushed the stage as the band members appeared. ReBelle is heard on airwaves throughout Africa, Europe, Jamaica, the Americas and the world. In the U.S., along the east coast, from Maine to Florida to California, ReBelle has performed hundreds of concerts at noted festivals, venues and colleges including the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, LEAF, Fire Water Festival, Harmonic Convergence Festival, Vermont Reggae Festival, Bel Chere, LEAF, Ocean State Reggae, Reggae Sunsplash, New England Reggae Festival, sell-out crowds at the Iron Horse Music Hall, Pearl Street Night Club, SOBs, The Roxy, House of Blues, Guilford College, Amherst College, Smith College and opened for all the greats in reggae including The Wailers, Damien Marley, Toots Hibbert, Israel Vibration, Joseph Hill and Burning Spear to name a few.
Daniel Rosow is a Southern Vermont raised artist, activist, and multi-instrumentalist. He started his career as a 16-year-old horn player for the Brooklyn based dub reggae band Trumystic and Senegal based bands Aziz Boukote and Nioune Le. During that time he toured on the road posing as a 21-year-old and got to open for many great acts like Culture, Yellow Man, Sister Nancy, Razelle, Army, Abjah, Mikey Dread, Dave Holland, Rufus Reed, Saloum Diabate, Manjul, and the JUnior Neville Brothers.
In 2009 Daniel cofounded the Reggae fusion group Mo Ambesa and recorded the Album "Metaphor". At age 19 he toured and recorded with the Brattleboro VT based afro-jazz-fusion ensemble Zabap as well as SeneGambia and France based hiphop-electronic band Mondo Gift. He also recorded a jazz-ragga album with Sudesh Theshra in Nepal and played a tour with Blondin Thiam from Nioune Le in France. In 2012 Daniel cofounded the roots reggae band Heirloom Seeds and recorded the album "Kebra". He's collaborated with Kirsty Rock of Easystar Allstars and Trumystic, Rocker T, Lady Lee, Toussaint the Liberator, and Manu and Kalpana of Rebelle.
Daniel performs all original reggae-jazz-hiphop lyrics and instrumentals. The lyrical content is largely inspired by the counter-colonialists His Majesty Qedamawi Haile Sellassie, Cheik Amadou Bamba, Yitzak Rabin, Thomas Sankara, Mumia Abu-jamal, and Leonard Peltier. Daniel combines the message of socio economic justice with a Kirtan Sufi psalmist like chant. The drum and bass remain central with a jammy improvisational instrumental lead.
