Swamp Stomp 6 with Lydia Loveless, Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons & more
Roots Hoot House Concerts presents the 6th annual Swamp Stomp outdoor music festival on Saturday, July 13 featuring:

Swamp Stomp will once again take place in West Kingston, R.I. near the entrance to The Great Swamp. This is the same event which in its previous years has brought the likes of The Sadies, Bottle Rockets, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, T-Model Ford, Amy LaVere, Vaelrie June, Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3, Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons, Patrick Sweany, Cordero, Dollar Store, and local heroes Shacklehands to the beautiful property in the wilds of West Kingston where it has been held since beginning in the summer of 2008. Grounds will open at 1 pm on the day of the event with music beginning at 2 pm. We are extremely excited about the offerings. Leading the charge is a young lady whose music, songs, and voice kicks some serious ass, that being Bloodshot Records recording artist LYDIA LOVELESS from Columbus, Ohio. Co-headlining with Ms. Loveless is what we consider to be the hottest act in these parts, the beyond-excellent JOE FLETCHER & THE WRONG REASONS. For Swamp Stomp 6, we asked Joe to "co-curate" by selecting a band he thought would fit the Swamp Stomp style. That band is the rock & rock outfit TOY SOLDIERS based out of Philadelphia whom Joe described as one of the best new bands he saw at this past March's SXSW festival in Austin. After hearing the band ourselves, we wholeheartedly agree! Also on the bill is TODD MAY, who also hails from Ohio. Todd is the lead guitarist for Lydia Loveless's band and has just recently released his solo debut, an album called Rickenbacker Girls that is a gorgeous mix of Americana-styled rock and pop tunes. Rounding out the lineup is no stranger to Swamp Stomp attendees, the South County-based group Shacklehands who will be appearing for the 5th time.
Swamp Stomp is an 18-and-over event and please, no pets. It will again be a BYOB/picnic event (i.e., bring whatever you'd like to eat or drink). All we ask is that you carry out whatever you brought in.

Blessed with a commanding, blast-it-to-the-back-of-the-room voice, twentysomething Lydia Loveless was raised on a family farm in Coshocton, Ohioa small weird town with nothing to do but make music. With a dad who owned a country music bar, Loveless often woke up with a house full of touring musicians scattered on couches and floors. When she got older, in the time-honored traditions of teenage rebellion, she turned her back on these roots, moved to the city (Columbus OH) and immersed herself in the punk scene, soaking up the musical and attitudinal influences of everyone from Charles Bukowski to Richard Hell to Hank III. Indestructible Machine, Loveless' Bloodshot debut, combines heady doses of punk rock energy and candor with the country classicism she was raised on and just can't shake; it's an gutsy and unvarnished mash up. The rattletrap electricity in foggy mountain throw downs like Bad Way To Go and Do Right may channel ground zero-era Old 97s, but the underlying bruised vulnerability comes across like Neko Case's tuff little sister. Can't Change Me, with its choppy, tense guitar tonality recalling Television's Richard Lloyd, stridently and stubbornly tells the world to stuff it, while More Like Them's muscular power pop hits on the classic rock and roll motif of the outsider; both could be anthems for blank generations along the rural routes everywhere. But she's also got the vocal nuances to pull off country soul well beyond her years on How Many Women, which could have been pulled right out of the strong-woman-wronged canon of Loretta Lynn, and Crazy, full of boozy heartache and the lilt of Appalachia. Loveless's true-to-life testimonials hit and hit hard. Be it whiskey, men, god or alienation, Lydia takes them all on; they may kick, but she kicks back and, even though she stands 5 tall, when the bar stools start flying, we want her on our side.

What can one say about Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons that hasn't already been said. If you live in Rhode Island and you are a fan of music, you have no doubt encountered Joe performing at a venue somewhere. Over the last year, Joe's notoriety has increased dramatically and his shows just keep getting better and better. Let's begin with last year's Newport Folk Festival appearance and continue with opening slots for the like of Deer Tick, Brown Bird, Lucero, The Devil Makes Three and plenty more. The coronation for Joe as an artist just may be this year's Newport Folk Fest where Joe was selected to curate a day of music called "Nashville to Newport." Let's also talk about the steady touring which has taken him from North to South and East to West spreading the Fletcher gospel. A magnetic performer, the guy has cool charisma to spare and is a motherf*ckin' monster talent. Swamp Stomp is pleased as punch to have Joe return (he first performed at SS in 2011), not to mention co-curate the day with his choice of up-and-coming Philly-based rocker Toy Soldiers. Swamp Stomp 6 will be Joe's final local appearance before his esteemed Newport Folk Fest appearance. That alone is reason to get on the stick and make tracks for Swamp Stomp 6!

Toy Soldiers is a Philadelphia-based rock & roll band brought to our attention by Joe Fletcher who said they were one of the best new bands he saw at this year's SXSW. Joe has great taste, so we took his recommendation and nabbed these guys for SS6. Named one of the "Top Bands to Watch in 2013" by USA Today, Toy Soldiers' is a lively & hard-working band formed in 2007 by front man Ron Gallo. The band started out as just a duo, then eventually settled into a solid 5-piece who love a good song and dance with no pretense or wall between the band and audience (as members often times ending up in the crowd). The group, consisting of Gallo (lead vocals, guitar), Dominic Billett (drums), Bill McCloskey (bass), Matt Kelly (guitar), and Luke Leidy (keys), spent most of 2012 playing hundreds of shows up and down the East Coast and in their hometown of Philadelphia, tearing through dive bars, festival stages and even theaters with their soulful brand of rock n' roll music. Their first record, Whisper Down the Lane, was described by WXPN's Bruce Warren as a "gritty, dirty collection of liquor-fueled Americana music, shifting flawlessly from roots, to blues, to country, to rockabillyan undeniable barn-burner." 2013 will see the beginning of a new chapter, with the Fall release of their second full-length, entitled The Maybe Boys. The album was recorded with producer Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man) and bridges the gap between all of their previous efforts, combining the group's earnest and eclectic songwriting style with the explosive energy of their live show.

Todd May is the lead guitarist for Lydia Loveless, and has also played with bands such as The Mooncussers and Ft. Shame. His solo debut Rickenbacker Girls was just released this past March and it's a beauty. Here's what the Pittsburgh Tribune had to say about Todd and the new album.
"May hits all the right notes on an album whose title track is an ode to the girls he knew in high school at Rickenbacker Air Force Base in Columbus, Ohio. May serves up these uniformly excellent songs with just the right amount of twang, and soars highest on "Josephine Calling," "Why Don't You Come Out Lately," "Build a Better Rocket," "Still Better Than You Ever Thought It Would Be" and the aforementioned title track. Here's hoping May and "Rickenbacker Girls" get the exposure they deserve."
