2nd FRIDAY @ MONDO Music Concert Series with THE EMILIO TEUBAL TRIO
The new popular bi-monthly 2ND FRIDAY @ MONDO Music Concert Series brings to you a special evening of Latin music traditions and more in concert on the second Friday of every other month at this unique venue. On this evening the series brings the acclaimed South American jazz fusion sounds of THE EMILIO TEUBAL TRIO to the  wonderfully intimate 3rd level Brownstone Theater at the new and unique arts related MONDO venue in quaint downtown Summit, NJ.

The trio is lead by pianist Emilio Teubal along with bassist Moto Fukushima and drummer Ignacio Rivas. Their compositions are a blend of jazz and elements of Argentine music, such as rhythms like chacarera and zamba along with the lyricism of tango melodies. The music consists of rhythmically and harmonically rich pre-composed structures and improvised sections that highlight the musicality of each member of the trio. This is what makes each performance so fresh and special.

Emilio Teubal was born in Madrid, Spain in 1976. At that time, his parents were in exile from the dictatorship government in Argentina. After a year in Spain, the whole family moved to Mexico City where they spent five years. In 1984, with the return of the democracy, his family decided to go back to Argentina. Once in Buenos Aires, Emilio started playing the piano at the age of nine. He studied piano at the National Conservatory of Buenos Aires, and composition, arranging, and orchestration with private teachers. He was a very active performer in the tango and jazz scene of Buenos Aires until 1999, when he relocated to New York City to continue his musical studies.

In the United States, Emilio earned a BFA in Music from the City College of New York, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He also received the Bushwick Composition Award for two consecutive years. At CCNY his teachers included prominent jazz figures such as Marc Copland, Scott Reeves, Bruce Barth, Mike Holober, John Pattitucci, Cliff Korman and Ron Carter.

Emilio has recently recorded his third album as a leader "Musica Para Un Dragon Dormido" (Music for a Sleeping Dragon), released on April 1st on the independent label Broklyn Jazz Underground Records. This new production features some of Emilio's longtime collaborators such as Moto Fukushima, Sam Sadigursky and John Hadfield, plus special guests Erik Friedlander and Satoshi Takeishi. Prior to this album, Emilio has released two critically aclaimed records: 'La Balteuband' (2006), and 'Un monton de notas' (2009), which journalist Brad Walseth from Jazzchicago.net called "...one of the strongest Latin jazz albums of the year and one I highly recommend for listeners looking for something new."
Emilio has performed as a leader in some of the most prestigious avant-garde and jazz venues in New York City, among them Iridium Jazz club, Joe's Pub, the Knitting Factory, BAM cafe , Cornelia Street Cafe, 55 Bar, and others, as well as some major Jazz Festivals such as the 2010 Buenos Aires Jazz Festival or the 2011 and 2012 Westfield Downtown Jazz Festival.

In 2007, Emilio was awarded Meet The Composer's prestigious Van Lier Fellowship, which provides support for talented, culturally diverse young people who are seriously dedicated to a career in the arts. His credits as a Jazz and Tango Pianist include performances and recordings with artists like the Grammy award winners Raul Jaurena and Fernando Otero, Erik Friedlander, Hector del Curto, Bob Mover, John Benitez, Lucia Pulido, Pedro Giraudo, Lisandro Adrover, Miguel Bertero, and Astor Piazolla's legendary violinist Fernando Suarez Paz. Emilio has also been a steady member of different New York based music groups like Sebastian Cruz's Coba, and Los Chantas Tango Group, and the Marta Gomez Group, with whom he has toured the USA, Mexico, Spain and Argentina

Ignacio Rivas was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina
He had his first drum set at the age of 13 though his passion for music and arts began much earlier. Coming from a family that encouraged him to be creative and open minded he always had the urge to express himself through music.

Before finishing high school Ignacio was already touring and recording professionally with different rock and pop oriented projects. Upon graduation he began his formal studies at the music school Escuela de Musica Contemporanea (Berklee International Network) where he studied with outstanding teachers such as Fernando Martinez, Juan "Pollo" Raffo, Ernesto Jodos, Pepi Taveira, and Pablo Lopez Ruiz.

During those years Ignacio was one of the first call drummers at the local music scene playing a wide range of musical styles including Jazz, Argentinean Folk, Brazilian, and Pop music. He performed in shows, recordings, projects and TV appearances with renowned artists such as Javier Malosetti, Juan Raffo, Alan Plachta, Pablo Valotta, María Eva Albistur.

Right After finishing his studies Ignacio traveled around the world on cruise ships playing top quality shows featuring artists from US and Europe. After this two intense years of playing two shows a day seven days a week Ignacio went to Boston to continue his studies at Berklee College of Music where he was accepted and awarded with an international Grant and Berklee Scholarship. After two years he graduated with honors with a Dual Bachelor Degree in Performance and Pro Music.
Today Ignacio Lives in New York City where he works as freelance drummer and teacher.

Moto Fukushima has been playing music for as long as he can remember. Accompanying such greats as Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, and Dave Weckl, he has redefined the role of the bass. With a strong background in jazz improvisation, Western classical music and the African inspired musical sensibilities of South America, Moto's playing is an amazing combination of finesse, subtlety, and power.

"This music is complex and forward thinking while remaining elegant, accessible,
and even danceable at times"- Jazz Inside Magazine

May we suggest that you plan to enjoy a delicious dinner or dessert before or after the show at one of several fine dining establishments in downtown Summit and the surrounding area. Most within walking distance from MONDO.
