A Girls Night Out at Great Brewster Island
Speaker: Author Stephanie Schorow will present "A Girls Night Out of the 1890s on Great Brewster Island" On a hot July day in 1891, four women set off for ten days of "roughing it" on Great Brewster Island. They kept a diary of their summer adventures on what they called an "enchanted isle." Now in the collection of the Schlesinger Library at Harvard University, the diary is a snapshot of a time when the Harbor Islands played a prominent role in the lives of Boston-area residents.
Author Stephanie Schorow will introduce us to the "Scribe, Autocrat,Aristocrat, and Acrobat," compare their photos of the island to those of today and discuss their adventures with humor and insight. http://www.stephanieschorow.com/
The location - Building 114 Built in 1903 as the U.S. Navy's joinery shop, Building 114 is now a state-of-the-art biomedical research facility. The ground floor features an exhibit of the building's rich history, old photographs, boat models, and a display of tools used in boat making. The lobby, open 24 hours a day, has a sitting area with vending machines, public phones, restrooms, a drinking fountain, and a bike rack. Outside, a 25-foot bandsaw, once used to cut lumber for naval vessels, is displayed next to the HarborWalk. The blade for the bandsaw hangs from the ceiling of the building's lobby. Picnic tables and benches by the HarborWalk provide a quiet spot overlooking the Little Mystic River.

There will be a door prize - a US Flag that has flown over the USS Constitution with a certificate stating so. Available ONLY to attendees of this event. One ticket per person ONLY. You must be present at the time of the drawing to receive the prize.
