The Old Brown Jacket

On that sweltering summer night in 1972, the last thing I wanted to deal with was Papa barging into my room. He had found out I appeared on TV the night before to debate an aversion therapist who was "curing" queers by zapping them with electricity. How could I explain it to him? He couldn't understand long hair or folk music, let alone the fact that I was queer and proud of it. This wasn't going to end well.

It's 7th grade at the middle school dance and my big crush is there surrounded by friends and giggling . . .her long, blue dress seems to magnify the sparkle of her already piercing green eyes . . . Summer 2012. Fred is standing in the middle of a California Mission Church. He is with a docent and 3 other visitors. One is an expert on the Catholic Church. One is an expert on the plight of the Native Americans. The third is an expert on . . . everything else. They stare at Fred. Is his fly open? Hair mussed? They have one thing in common. They are all experts on which famous black person Fred resembles.
