Join the Everett Philharmonic on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 3 PM for the exciting conclusion to our Ninth concert season! Listening to our listeners' requests, we are delighted to present a program specially selected by our audience.

First up is an exciting young cellist, Stephen Leou (EPO Competition winner) who will jump start your listening vibes with his performance of the 4th Movement of Shostakovich's Concerto No. 1 in E Flat Major.

Music lovers in central Europe in the mid-19th century divided themselves into two warring camps, the partisans of Richard Wagner and those of Johannes Brahms. If you liked one, you simply had to hate the other (much like many of todays sports fans!) EPOs spring concert presents masterpieces by each, with the fond hope that a 21st century audience will be able to enjoy music by both these former rivals.

Wagners Overture to Rienzi, his first successful opera, is full of youthful assurance, with a catchy tune as well.

Performing as Isolde will be mezzo-soprano Melissa Plagemann, who has been praised by audiences and the press for her "Clear, burnished voice" and "mezzo rich with an alto's strength and a soprano's shining top edge" (Tacoma News Tribune).Tristan und Isolde is Wagner's most advanced piece, the work of a composer fully in control of his art. The rich chromatic harmony expresses the intensity and hopelessness of a forbidden love. The yearning of the Prelude is balanced by the bliss of the Liebestod.

In contrast, the second half of the concert offers the upbeat 2nd Symphony of Brahms. The work was written while the composer was on vacation, so it should be no surprise that we hear him in one of his sunniest moods. (Though there's always a thundercloud or two in Brahms' weather forecast!) We are taken on a musical journey, starting with the gentle opening of the first movement, continuing through a variety of moods, moving on to the reflective second movement with its agitated middle, followed by the cheerful third movement where some sections get downright playful, and concluding with the exuberant finale with its heartfelt second theme. Quite the trip.
Wagner or Brahms? Why not both!

Dr. Paul-Elliott Cobbs will share his insights and historical details at the pre-concert stage side chat at 2:00 pm. Our wonderful soloist will likely join our Maestro for some of her own comments.
(You will also be able to get your first choice of seating for the concert!)

This is a unique opportunity that you won't want to miss!
