OUR LITTLE SISTER - (UMIMCH DIARY) : JAPANESE FILM WEEKEND
Directed by internationally acclaimed director Hirozaku Kore-eda, Our Little Sister is adapted from Yoshida Akimis best-selling graphic novel Umimachi Diary.
Three sisters in their twenties live together in a seaside town. When they learn of their estranged fathers death, they decide to attend his funeral. There they meet their younger half-sister for the first time and invite her to live with them. The film takes us through the many varied colors and textures of the four seasons as the sisters work out their relationship to each other and their past to redefine the meaning of family. The film stars Haruka Aayase, Masami Nagasawa, Kaho, Suzu Hirose. Our Little Sister won the Japan Academy Prize for Picture of the Year and Director of the Year. The British Film Institute declard that Koreedas social realist underpinnings , diversity and understated artistry mark him out as a great humanist filmmaker. Kor-edas other films include Like Father, Like Son (2013), Still Walking (2008), Maborosi (1995) among many others. His most recent film, Shoplifters, won the 2018 Cannes Festival Palme dOr.
(2016, 128 minutes)
Our Little Sister is a film of surpassing beauty and sensitivity, a fully realized insight into family Michael Berkowitz, Huffington Post
Our Little Sister has a deceptively episodic plot. Seeming to wander through small incidents and mundane busyness, it acquires momentum and dramatic weight through a brilliant kind of narrative stealth. You are shaken, by the end, at how much you care about these women and how sorry you are to leave their company.--A.O. Scott NYTimes
