The visceral rock of Schooltree and the funky nine piece horn driven Macrotones frame the much anticipated album release from the noir-inspired electronic band This Bliss. Whoa.
The Macrotones are a 9-piece, horn-driven ensemble steeped in funk, afrobeat, cinematic soul, ethiojazz, rock, reggae, and more, resulting in dark, interlaced rhythms and progressive arrangements. The bands tightly-honed grooves and infectious sound has shared the stage with like-minded practitioners such as the Budos Band, Lee Fields, Durand Jones, Sinkane, Grupo Fantasma, the Funk Ark, Big Mean Sound Machine, Ikebe Shakedown, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, and Barika, and is in good company with fellow instrumentalists Brownout, Jungle Fire, the Menahan Street Band, and the Shaolin Aeronauts.
This Bliss is not another laptop band. With heavy beats, layered textures, and a character-driven vocal, This Bliss releases its first album, Forensic Styles, a cinematic dreamscape that explores the world of trip-hop and electronicathrough the lens of a crime novelist.
Formed by Nick Zampiello (Party Bois), owner of New Alliance East Mastering in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and singer-songwriter and Boston favorite, Jess Baggia (Man Trouble), This Bliss marries Zampiellos affinity for drum machines and synthesizers with Baggias pop-songwriter sensibility to create noir-inspired electronic songs. Believe, the first single off the record, is a sultry homage to post-punk, but rivals any contemporary radio hit with bursts of shimmering synths and anthemic hook. Thats the unique configuration that drives This Bliss.
Schooltree is part of the contemporary musical movement creating risk-taking, long-form work of substance in the era of the algorithm-driven pop single. The modern independent musician is advised by every blog and music industry professional to use proven formulas to "get your music heard;" the current rebellion resists pandering to the lowest common denominator and instead follows their own vision. Inspired by stubbornly individualistic music innovators like Frank Zappa and Laura Nyro, Schooltree fuses research and aesthetics of literature and classical music with rock music to create something uniquely accessible, visceral, and profound.
