Maine is blessed with a plentiful supply of water, but there are growing threats to quality and quantity of our precious resource. To effectively address those threats, it's imperative that concerned citizens and groups addressing water issues share information and coordinate efforts toward protecting our water resources. That is what the Water Security Summit is all about. Our goals are to raise awareness of various threats to our water, explore all options to protect water in our communities, and to inspire everyone to take action.

To effectively address these serious threats, its imperative that concerned citizens and groups addressing water issues share information and experiences and coordinate efforts toward protecting our water resources.

To that end, Sierra Club Maine, the Penobscot Nation, Community Water Justice and a number of individual water activists have organized a summit on water security and rights to be held at the University of Maines Buchanan Alumni House on Saturday, September 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The major goals of the summit are to raise awareness of various threats to our water, explore all options to protect water in our communities, and to inspire everyone to take action.

The event, which will open with a traditional Penobscot ceremony, will include featured speakers and break-out sessions to address various water issues. Speakers include Native American attorney/teacher/activist Sherri Mitchell, tribal attorney Tara Houska (Couchiching First Nation Anishinaabe) who is the National Campaigns Director of Honor the Earth and a former advisor on Native American affairs to Bernie Sanders, and Michelle Sanborn, New Hampshire organizer for the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund and co-founder of Citizens of Alexandria Rights Effort.
