Music for Peace: Music of Brahms and Dvorak

In the third and final concert of our 2018-2019 Music for Peace series, we present music of Dvoràk and Brahms, featuring Dvoràks Dumky Trio in e minor, and the Brahms Piano Quintet in f minor, Op. 32, "often called the crown of his chamber music" according to his biographer Jan Swafford.

Donations to support our work for peace are needed in any amount. Supporters donate $250 or more to Massachusetts Peace Action Education Fund; they receive two tickets with preferred seating in the first 3 rows to each concert and recognition in the programs. Sponsors donate $500 and receive four tickets; Benefactors donate $1,000 and receive eight tickets.
The audience is invited to join the musicians and Peace Action members at a reception after the concert.
Klaudia Szlachta is an award-winning violinist who has both performed and taught internationally. A Polish national, Ms. Szlachta was a scholarship recipient, earning her Bachelor of Music degree from Boston Conservatory, summa cum laude, with Professor Magdalena Suchecka Richter as her teacher. Her Masters and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees were achieved at Boston University under the tutelage of Professor Yuri Mazurkevich. While there, she won both the Bach prize and the Concerto Competition, playing the Szymanowski Violin Concerto under the baton of David Hoose. Upon graduation, Ms. Szlachta was invited by the Institute and Festival of Contemporary Performance in New York to perform Luciano Berios Sequenza and Elliott Carters Triple Duo. Recently, she returned to New York to give the World Premiere of Six Miniatures, composed for her by Thomas Weaver. Ms. Szlachta also recently recorded music for a film entered in the Irish Film Institutes Movie Festival, appeared in the prestigious Convergence Ensemble Chamber concert series, and showcased a new composition by Ketty Nez at the Festival of New Music in Florida. She has also had the privilege to collaborate on stage with Menahem Pressler and Joseph Silverstein, as well as tour the east coast as a member of the Amabile Trio and Hubbard Quartet. Locally, she performs on regular basis with the Cantata Singers and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Currently, Ms. Szlachta is on the faculty of the School of Music at Boston University, the New England Conservatorys Preparatory School, the Intensive Community Program and BUTIs summer program at Tanglewood. She is also the Director of the Violin Workshop at Tanglewood.
Described as a consummate artist, violinist Jean Huang has concertized throughout the United States and Taiwan. Praised for her poised and expressive playing, Jean enjoys playing both standard repertoire and new music, and she is constantly searching for new ways to reach audiences. She holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance with honors from the New England Conservatory (NEC), and is currently a doctoral candidate there. A native of Taiwan, Jean started playing the violin at age five and by age twelve had won a prize at the National Taiwan Concerto Competition. Huang has studied in the United States since age fifteen. She is an active teacher, coordinates and plays with the Bleep Blop Elecro-acoustic Ensemble, and has an interest in a variety of music including Chinese-influenced work. She took violin-making lessons and in 2013 made her first violin, recently published articles on How to practice efficiently and Performers role in music in the Taiwanese classical music magazine MUSIK, and was invited to give mini lecture recitals in several Taiwan cities in early 2018.
Violinist Amy Galluzzo is a Jules C. Reiner Prize winner and a finalist in the Naftzger Competition and the Concerto Competition. Her career started with the Boston Philharmonic and Indian Hills orchestras and has continued internationally, from Londons Barbican to Boston's Jordan Hall. She attended the Tanglewood Music Festivals for several years and served as concertmaster under renowned conductors. Ms. Galluzzo collaborates in chamber music concerts and frequently performs as a part of the NEC Avant Garde Ensemble; the Calithumpian Consort, an ensemble that specializes in contemporary music; and Carpe Diem String Quartet.
Hyun-Ji Kwon has participated in numerous music festivals and concerts in both Korea and North America. She serves on the faculty of Boston Universitys summer Tanglewood Institute and joined the BU School of Music cello faculty in 2015. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree at Ewha Womens University in Seoul, Korea; a Master of Music degree in Cello Performance as well as a Graduate Diploma at New England Conservatory, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Cello Performance at Boston Universitys School of Music. She last performed for Music for Peace in January 2018, appearing with Szlachta and Rosenbaum.
Pianist Victor Rosenbaum has concertized widely as soloist and chamber music performer in the United States, Europe, Asia, Israel, and Russia in such prestigious halls as Tully Hall in New York and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. A long-time member of the faculty of New England Conservatory in Boston, whose Piano Department he chaired for more than a decade, he has also been on the faculty of Mannes School of Music in New York. He has been Visiting Professor of Piano at the Eastman School of Music and a guest teacher at Juilliard. He has also served on the jury of several international piano competitions. His highly praised recording of Schubert is on Bridge Records and the release of the last three Beethoven sonatas on the same label was named by American Record Guide as one of the top ten classical recordings of 2005. Three discs on the Fleur de Son label feature music of Schubert and Mozart. He is Music Director of the Music for Peace concert series.
