Shelley, the receptionist at the financial district law firm where I work, hands me two message slips when I return from lunch. "Ear-ma can I ask you a favor? When your friends call the office, tell them to say their names in English." One message is from Susana, my best friend; the other from a client. I count to three and take a deep breath. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference . . . Where the hell do I start This conversation.

"Green Piece"
Soon we found ourselves alone in the office. We both were picking up cans and bottles left over from the planning party. We were both standing over the glass recycling bin. Our eyes met long and hard; it was the kind of eye contact that changes things. My hands were shaking so hard, one of the bottles I was holding slipped out of my hands and fell into the bin clanking and banging all the way down until it smashed onto the bottles below. We looked into the bin, back to each other and then his lips smashed onto mine.

I'm making my way down Bryant Street, beginning to think this fortune teller stuff is just a load of circus peanuts, when I see a box on the sidewalk. A big box. A big empty box. I mean, it's gotta be empty, right? These boxes out here are always empty. Anything good in 'em is already gone. Keep on walking, I tell myself. Keep on walking. But for no good reason, this one's got a fix on me. So I turn around.
