Workshop: Write a Beautiful Letter with Poet Calligrapher Lindsey Wayland
A letter is one of the most generous things you can give someone. The gift of a letter gives the recipient a moment to pause and exist within the space and connection between letter-writer and recipient.

The class will focus on writing a beautiful letter. You will hand-make envelopes from everyday supplies; artfully address an envelope with calligraphic typography; focus on raw, beautiful materials; learn the art of storytelling in letter-writing; read ancient letters for inspiration; unleash authentic language in letters; discover how to extract inspiration for artists and writers in the after-thought of letter-writing; and implement systems to find time to write letters in todays busy world.

Each student will leave with very beautiful supplies. But more importantly, students will leave with a refreshed or new deeply-felt sense of connection. All levels are welcome.

INSTRUCTOR BIO
Lindsey Wayland is a poet and calligrapher in Port Townsend, Washington. Raised by wildly creative parents, she grew up in a family whose mission and highest regarded value was creativity. Any creative whim she had was nourished with great care. She wrote her first poem at age six. Her poetry volumes were comprised of artfully written scriptit was her love of typography which led her to calligraphy. She studied Creative Writing and Ceramics at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Letter-writing combines Waylands love of poetry and calligraphy; in February 2017 Wayland calligraphed 70 letters near and far. She has facilitated art, poetry, and letter-writing workshops for adults and youth, primarily at-risk and inner-city children. She is a member of the IAMPETH, the oldest and largest penmanship organization, dedicated to practicing and preserving the beautiful arts of calligraphy and fine penmanship. Her love of teaching is born of her intuitive connection with people and her ability to reflect the highest potential of her students.

She is currently working on a book of poems called Bring Your Empty Hands about the space emptiness can embody, the many shapes of soil, and how a bone is a prayer.
