The Marches! 136th Birthday of Isadora Duncan
Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theatre/ The Joan Weill Center for Dance
New York, NY
Partager cet événement :

On the occasion of the 136th birthday of Isadora Duncan, Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company will perform The Marches!  an evening of revolutionary dances of heroism, strength and light at The Ailey Citigroup Theater on May 16, 17, and 18, 2013. The program will showcase rarely seen solos and group works nearly lost to the public from the latter period (1904-24) of Isadora Duncan's career. As told in her own words and theatrically staged by Lori Belilove, these signature pieces will be set against the revolutionary fervor of Isadora's life, marking a crucial point in the timeline of American Art and Culture.

Repertory will include Rakoczy Marche, a work first performed in Budapest in 1902 as a "hymn to the heroes of Hungary" and Slow March, first performed in New York City in 1915. Slow March, a dance filled with tragedy and grief, concludes with great hope. The dance, a serious work of lamentation, despair, and renewal, was created following the simultaneous death of her two children in 1913 and features a distinctive choreographic architecture consisting of a chorus, a soloist, and three children who return at the end in the company of angels. The program will also include Marche Heroique from 1916, one of Isadora's most daring statements in response to World War I.

The performance of these pieces allows the audience to delve more deeply into Isadora's later, more political and socially relevant themes. While the general public is most familiar with Isadora's earlier lyrical repertory, as she matured as an artist and experienced personal and universal tragedy, her work shifted to become darker and more complex. These pieces handed down through three generations of Duncan Dancers will expose the viewer to another side of this most revolutionary and multifaceted artist. The humanity represented in each of the pieces powerfully reflects the way politics and world affairs affect the lives of everyday people. Themes of loss, hope, redemption, and the enduring determination to survive resonate with our contemporary society now more than ever.

Running time is 90 minutes, with one 15-minute intermission, Pre-show begins one half hour prior to curtain as patrons are entering.

Opening Gala - Thursday, May 16
The performance on May 16 will followed by an after-party gala celebration. Tickets are $100 and include admission to the performance as well as the after-party in the courtyard of The Ailey Citigroup Theater.
