Program Description
This lecture provides masonry designers and specifiers with a background in the history of masonry construction and in behavioral problems associated with specific periods and styles of construction.  it further provides practitioners and knowledge of the material and techniques used in the repair and strengthening of historic masonry structures.

Learning Objectives:
Understand the history of masonry construction.
Recognize problems with the behavior of existing, and   especially historic, masonry
Have knowledge of the materials used in the repair of historic masonry
Understand different approaches to the strengthening of historic masonry.

Guest Speaker
Craig M. Bennett, Jr., P.E.
President, Bennett Preservation Engineering PC
Mr. Bennett is a practicing structural engineer, who now works exclusively in historic preservation.  He holds undergraduate degrees in civil engineering and architecture, and a masters degree in structural engineering, all from Georgia Tech.
For the past 28 years, he has been deeply involved in evaluation of and repair work on a number of historic structures around the southeast. His current engineering work includes most places between New Orleans and Washington, DC. He was responsible for the post-earthquake structural repair and strengthening of Blair House, The Presidents Guest House.
Mr. Bennett lectures at the Clemson/College of Charleston Joint Graduate Program in Historic Preservation.  He is the past Chairman of the City of Charlestons Board of Architectural Review and is the President of Bennett Preservation Engineering PC.
