Schütz German Requiem (Musikalische Exequien)
Motets by the Bach family
Heinrich Schütz was born in 1585, a century before the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach. Both were profound and prolific composers. Schütz wrote the Musikalische Exequien, based on Lutheran texts, for funeral services of his patron Henry II, Count of Reuss-Gera. The composition features music for small solo ensembles and choir and was the first requiem in the German language. Bach collected and preserved motets and other music composed by his ancestors, in part to prove that he came from seven generations of musicians. Schola Cantorum has performed at Tanglewood, Boston Early Music Festival and other venues for more than 25 years and has released several recordings. Twelve voices, a chamber organ, and the theorbo (largest member of the lute family) will fill the concert hall with gorgeous and transcendent music.
