Kurt Gerron was a huge star in Germanys theater and cabaret scene in the 1920s and 1930s, performing with some of the countrys best artists and entertainers of the time to include Marlene Dietrich in Von Sternbergs The Blue Angel. Gerron was the first star to sing Mack the Knife in Brechts Three Penny Opera. But with the rise of Adolf Hitler, the acclaimed Jewish entertainer was relegated to the role of prisoner in a Nazi-run concentration camp. There he was forced to put his talents to use writing and directing a propaganda film The Führer Gives a City to the Jews showing the world how well-treated the Jews were. It presented the concentration camp as a wonderful place This documentary tells Gerrons shocking and tragic story and provides a fascinating documentary look at the era of 1920s cabaret.
Robert Kalfin founded New Yorks Chelsea Theatre Center. He won five Tony Awards, four Tony nominations and 21 Obie Awards. Mr. Kalfin directed more than 200 productions and new play workshops, musicals and the classics on Broadway, and Off-Broadway.
Jeremy Lawrence is an actor, playwright and lyricist. He has been working with materials of the Berlin cabarets between the wars since 1990, when he created Cabaret Verboten, an evening of songs and sketches of the period. These played in Los Angeles, New York, London selling CD Berlin Cabaret Songs.
