*Toyoaki Workshop
Artist: Sanjuro Toyoaki
It is rare to find someone who has direct lineage and working knowledge of Ozashiki (Geisha) music. This workshop will give a firsthand experience of geisha music. The important idea of incorporating improvisation into Ozashiki music rather than following a set score for the entire performance is a key idea which will be explored, using music from the Toyoaki tradition.
Wednesday June 27th 6pm
Union Bank Community Room, Japan Center East Mall, 22 Peace Plaza, SF, CA

*Introduction to Nagauta Shamisen With Grand Master Chizuru Kineya (Tokyo)
Nagauta, which means "long song," will be explored in this workshop. Nagauta, considered to be the classical tradition of shamisen music, is played directly from scores which have been passed down for hundreds of years. Parts of Nagauta are used to accompany Kabuki plays, but the music can also be performed by itself. We will explore this classical tradition through the perspective and methods of the Kineya shamisen school.
Thursday, June 28th 6pm
Union Bank Community Room, Japan Center East Mall, 22 Peace Plaza, SF, CA
