Bach Haydn Mozart
Internationally acclaimed violinist Ingrid Matthews, violoncellist Tanya Tomkins, and fortepianist Tamara Friedman offer up a veritable feast of music by J. S. Bach (the favorite Cello Suites No. 1), Mozart (his masterful Trio in C major, K. 548), C. P. E. Bach (his soulful
Violin Sonata in C minor, Wq. 78), and Haydn (his jocular, rip-roaring "Polacca" Trio in A major).

"Playing at a level of deep-seated feeling" (San Francisco Performances)

All of the performers will be playing in historical instruments, using period bows and gut strings, creating the rich, warm sound that conveys these dynamic yet intimate musical works best.

THE MUSICIANS

INGRID MATTHEWS is well established as one of the premier baroque violinists of her generation.  She won first prize in the Erwin Bodky International Competition for Early Music in 1989, and was a member of Toronto's Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra before founding the Seattle Baroque Orchestra with Byron Schenkman; she served as its Music Director from 1994 to 2013.  Ingrid has performed extensively around the world with many of todays leading early music ensembles, appearing as a soloist and/or guest director with many groups including the New York Collegium, the Australian Branden-burg Orchestra, the Bach Sinfonia (Washington DC), Ars Lyrica (Houston), Musica Angelica (Los Angeles), New Trinity Baroque (Atlanta), and numerous others.

Ingrid has won high critical acclaim for a discography ranging from the earliest Italian violin music through the Sonatas and Partitas of J.S. Bach (the finest complete set of these works (Third Ear Classical Music Listening Companion).  Sought-after as a chamber musician, she has collaborated with most of the leading early musicians of her generation and served as first violinist of the notable ensemble La Luna.  Ingrid has taught at Indiana University, the University of Toronto, Oberlin College, the University of Washington, the University of Southern California/Los Angeles, and the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. She is also active as a visual artist.

TANYA TOMKINS, a virtuoso on both the Baroque and modern cello, is equally at home playing a J. S. Bach cello suite in an intimate house concert or anchoring the cello section of the internationally renowned Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra on concert stages around the world.

Inspired by Anner Bylsma, with whom she studied, Tanya became interested in the performance of music on original instruments and particularly the music of the Baroque period.  In 1987 she earned a soloists diploma at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.  As a founding member of the Trio d'Amsterdam, with clarinetist Eric Hoeprich and fortepianist Stanley Hoogland, she made a New York debut at the Frick Collection, which was recorded for National Public Radio and also appeared in Lincoln Center's Great Performers series in 1996. The trio recorded a CD for Koch.

In 2001 Tanya won the Erwin Bodky Competition for early music soloists in Boston, the first cellist to be awarded the prize.  As a performer of Baroque music, she serves as co-principal cellist of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Portland Baroque Orchestra.  She has been featured as soloist with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the American Bach Soloists, the Oregon Bach Soloists, the Mozart Festival in San Luis Obispo, California, at an early music festival in Paradise, Montana, with acclaimed English Baroque violinist Monica Huggett, and at the Göttingen Handel Festival.

Tanya has performed and recorded with such orchestras as the Nederlkandse Bachvereiniging, the Ensemble Bouzignac (Vanguard), The Classical Band (Sony), and La Petite Bande, La Stagione Frankfurt, and L'Orchestre des Champs-Elysees under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe (Harmonia Mundi).

As part of the Zivian-Tomkins Duo, Tanya collaborates with pianist and fortepianist Eric Zivian on both modern and original instruments, and she is also a member of the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble and the San Francisco String Trio.

Pianist TAMARA FRIEDMAN, praised for the depth, wit, and humor of her performances (Seattle Times), attended the Oberlin Conservatory and received her master's degree from the Mannes College of Music (NYC). She has collaborated with such artists as Stanley Ritchie, Jaap Schröder, and Max van Egmond, and appears with violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock as Duo Amadeus.  In the Pacific Northwest she has performed on the Seattle Camerata, Allegro Baroque and Beyond, Belle Arte, Early Music Guild, Gallery Concerts, and Mostly Nordic series and for the Governors Chamber Music Festival.  She has been the featured performer in early piano workshops for Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, WA) and the Western Early Keyboard Association, and maintains a private studio in Seattle, where she teaches modern piano and fortepiano on the collection of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century keyboard instruments on display at SEKM! - the Seattle Early Keyboard Museum.  Her summers are spent in Bath, Maine, where she also has a group of historic pianos.
