A group of International music heavy hitters unite for a single show and recording of Malian guitar music drawn from the diverse cultures in the country, from the Savannah to the Sahara, the music of the Bambara griots, the Songhai, and the Taureg nomads of the North. Guitarist Nathaniel Braddock (Air Congo, Occidental Brothers Dance Band) is joined on guitar by journalist and musician Banning Eyre (Afropop Worldwide), bassist Mike Rivard (Club d'Elf), and percussionists Bertram Lehman and Idrissa Kone for a rollicking tour of some of the heaviest music traditions around.
NATHANIEL BRADDOCK
Musician and composer Nathaniel Braddock tours internationally and performs an array of musical styles in venues as disparate as underground arts spaces and Lincoln Center. Based for years in Chicago, Braddock relocated to Sydney, Australia, in 2014, and to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2016.
BANNING EYRE
Banning Eyre is a writer, guitarist, photographer and producer. He has written about international music, especially African music, since 1988. During all that time, he has been a lead producer for the syndicated, Peabody Award-winning public radio program Afropop Worldwide. He also comments and reports on music for National Public Radio's All Things Considered, and has contributed over the years to The Boston Phoenix, Guitar Player, Global Rhythm, fRoots (Folk Roots), Songlines, The Beat, CD Now, CMJ, salon.com, Music Alive, New Music Monthly, Music Hound and All Music Guides and other publications. He has traveled and done music research in 16 African countries, as well as in the Caribbean, South America and Europe. In 1995, Eyre co-authored AFROPOP! An Illustrated Guide to Contemporary African Music with Sean Barlow. Eyre's acclaimed book focussed on Malian guitar styles, In Griot Time, An American Guitarist in Mali, was released by Temple University Press (2000) and in the UK on Serpent's Tail (2002). The companion CD Eyre compiled, In Griot Time, String Music from Mali, was released on Stern's Africa.
MIKE RIVARD
Perhaps the only musician to have performed with big band legend Cab Calloway, Frank Zappa discovery Wildman Fisher, gnawa master Hassan Hakmoun and two members of the Velvet Underground, (though sadly, not all at the same time), bassist /composer Mike Rivard defies easy categorization and finds himself at home in a bewildering array of settings: From the low-rock of Morphine to the mountains of Morocco with local Berber musicians, with side trips into the Broadway pits of The Lion King and Wicked to sitting in with Medeski Martin & Wood.
BERTRAM LEHMAN
The multi-talented Lehmann is a drummer, percussionist, ethnomusicologist and writer. He quickly has become an integral part of the New England music scene, catching attention and international exposure during tours to Israel & Germany with groups led by such internationally renown artists like Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza.
