Music in the Chapel: Lyz Jaakola

Lakewood's Music in the Chapel concerts showcase a variety of artists in one of our city's most beloved architectural treasures, the Lakewood Memorial Chapel.

On Sunday, August 5, listen to Elizabeth "Lyz" Jaakola perform compositions in many styles and genres including traditional Anishinaabe music, jazz, blues and opera. Lyz is a musician, educator and an enrolled member of the Fond du Lac band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. She teaches music and Native American studies at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.

The concert begins at 3 p.m. Doors open at 2 p.m. Self-guided tour brochures of the Lakewood Memorial Chapel will be available.

Dedicated in 1910, the Lakewood Memorial Chapel was modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul by prominent Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones. It features a 40-foot high dome ringed with stained glass windows and 12 mosaic angels. The Chapel's mosaic interior, created by New York designer Charles Lamb, is made up of more than 10 million mosaic pieces of marble, colored stone and glass fused with gold and silver. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Chapel is one of the finest examples of Byzantine Revival architecture with mosaic interior in the country.
