The Last Mile: Advanced Completion Technology for Extended Reach Laterals
Abstract: Technological and operational improvements have made it possible to drill increasingly longer laterals. At the same time that lateral lengths are increasing in the Permian Basin, frac intensities are also increasing, proppant loading continues an upward trend, and stage spacing is decreasing. All these factors continue to challenge completion technologies when completing extended reach laterals, especially at the toe stages. Energen, one of the most active operators in the Permian Basin has solved this problem by consistently implementing sliding sleeve technology at the toe stages of its extended reach cemented liner wells. Run in clusters of four or five sleeves, each stage at the toe of these extended reach wells benefits from the efficiency of ball-drop completions, combined with the placement accuracy of limited entry stimulation. In this presentation Energen will discuss some of the benefits they have experienced utilizing this system and Packers Plus will elaborate on the advancements in completion technology that have provided higher density stimulation for greater reservoir coverage in horizontal wellbores, while improving operations and mitigating risks that can lead to unplanned non-productive time, cost overruns and lost production.
