Fireside Chat: Garment Drafting Systems - A Triumph of Genius

Local costume designer, Kathleen Richert, will give us a look at a few of the drafting systems that the Industrial Revolution brought to the business of dressmaking. The systems sought to put the knowledge an experienced dressmaker or tailor might acquire over a lifetime into the hands of home sewers. One advert says, Any child can now learn to draft perfect fitting dresses from measure. Another system boasts, You can make FIVE DOLLARS per day by using or selling the McDowell Garment Drafting Machine. Richert specializes in historically accurate clothing and sometimes uses the McDowell machine. She will bring along other tools and systems from her own collection.

Seating is limited; please reserve your tickets in advance. $5; $3 for seniors or students; free for museum members.

Visiting the museum at this time does require the use of stairs.
