Twelve Angry Men - Live Play by The Stark County Courthouse Players
In the mid 1950's, CBS aired an intense TV episode into American living rooms about a twelve man jury (it was the 50's) locked in a hot, humid, cramped courtroom and asked to deliberate the guilt or innocence of a 19 year old man accused of fatally stabbing his father. Tempers flare as the verdict vacillates and the character of each person is revealed. The final verdict and how it is reached has made this production a very popular play adapted from the TV show. A famous classic film starring Henry Fonda followed.
The play is performed by The Courthouse Players, an informal, volunteer acting company consisting entirely of Stark County lawyers and judges with trial and acting experience. It was assembled to present a legal outreach program for Law Week in 2009, by way of an enlightening and entertaining constitutional lesson on the Bill of Rights- Twelve Angry Men. It became a popular "hit" and was performed for a few years throughout Stark County and elsewhere in Northeast Ohio. The Courthouse Players followed this production with "The Andersonville Trial", based on a post-civil war trial, which ran for several years and was also performed throughout Ohio, including the Lincoln Lions Theatre, and in Washington, D.C. on the 150th Anniversary of the trial in the federal court where it took place. The Courthouse Players are proud to revive 12 Angry Men and present it here in Massillon.
The cast consists of local Judge Eddie Elum, Judge Bob Lavery, and attorneys Ross Rhodes, John Scavelli, Barry Wakser, Tom Borcoman, Jason Reese, Jeff Jakmides, Lem Green, Don Marshall, Darrell Holland, and Joe Martuccio, who founded the company and directs the play.
A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. "He doesn't stand a chance," mutters the guard as the 12 jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open-and-shut case until one of the jurors begins opening the others' eyes to the facts. "This is a remarkable thing about democracy," says the foreign-born juror, "that we are notified by mail to come down to this place and decide on the guilt or innocence of a person; of a man or woman we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing." But personal it is, with each juror revealing his or her own character as the various testimonies are re-examined, the murder is re-enacted and a new murder threat is born before their eyes! Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and the jurors become 12 angry men.
