Pop-Up Workshop: Fostering Safe Theatrical Intimacy
POP UP WORKSHOP: Fostering Safe Theatrical Intimacy
The #MeToo movement has held unsafe work practices accountable everywhere: from corporate America to the film industry isnt it time we made sure theatre in the Triangle was safe too? While many theatre companies are used to the practice of bringing in fight choreographers to make sure combat on stage is safe, for some reason, many theatres dont do the same for intimacy. It is simply up to the director and actors to make sure an intimate scene feels safe to everyone involved, and sometimes thats simply not enough. Thats where intimacy directors come in.
According to Intimacy Directors International, The Intimacy Director is more than a choreographer; they are an advocate for the ensemble and for each actor. The Intimacy Director takes responsibility for the emotional safety of the actors and anyone else in the rehearsal hall while they are present. No matter what happens during intimacy choreography, the Intimacy Director is responsible for the energy in the room and must control all outbursts and inappropriate comments. They are the last line of defense between choreography and a harassment lawsuit.
WTF is proud to host a certified intimacy director, who will be providing a workshop with the cast of Crumble (Lay Me Down Justin Timberlake), to teach combat coaches, directors, and actors alike how to create safety when choreographing intimate scenes. Whether for a scene with a simple kiss or a sex scene, get the tools to make sure your whole cast and crew feels safe.
#TimesUp for any workplace that makes their employees feel unsafe. Lets make theatre in the Triangle that much safer so it can grow even more. Tickets are $25 and hosted by Jeff A.R. Jones . The event is offered this Saturday May 12th ONLY from 12pm-3pm.
