EAT Café Welcomes El Compadre

On Tuesday, May 8th, Cristina Martinez and Ben Miller of El Compadre (formerly South Philly Barbacoa) collaborate with chef Valerie Erwin of EAT Café for a delicious, fun, and informative meal. Cristina has won national notice, including being nominated for a James Beard Award, for Barbacoa.

Special guests that evening include Merthus Mbonigada, the Garden Manager of Nationalities Services Center's Gardens, and Ellen Ramage, Program Manager of the Gardening Project.

Menu Highlights (based on availability):
Fried Plantain Chips
Shrimp Veracruz: Sautéed shrimp with tomatoes and green olives
Baby Goat and Almond Barbacoa served with Fresh Housemade Corn Tortillas, Goat Broth and Chickpeas
Jicama and Citrus Salad with Orange Vinaigrette
Cornmeal Shortcake with Rhubarb Compote and Whipped Cream

Besides serving wonderful food, Ben and Cristina are well known for their advocacy for undocumented restaurant workers. Cristina herself is undocumented and uses her story to illustrate the kinds of issues that undocumented workers face.

EAT Cafe, the restaurant that Valerie has been managing for the last year, is a pay what you can restaurant that is part of Drexel University's Center for Hunger Free Communities. EAT is located at 3820 Lancaster Avenue in West Philadelphia.

Nationalities Services Center (NSC) serves recently arrived refugees. NSC runs two gardens--Growing Home, and Growing Together--which allow both recent immigrants and long time residents to grow food for their own use and to sell at a farmers' market.
