We at Cascadia Composers are inspired by the many courageous stands to protect our rivers and clean water sources, and by the moral courage shown at Standing Rock. We are keeping in mind all those protectors along what Chinook Indians for millennia called Big River, the Columbia and its tributaries. To celebrate we asked Cascadia Composers to explore with percussion, woodwinds, strings or voice what the river and its France-sized watershed might mean to them in music.
To string together our beads of sound are gifted story tellers Ed Edmo and Will Hornyak, and visual artist Bonnie Meltzer. Ed Edmo was born at Celilo Falls, a warrior of words and legends. Will Hornyak is a master of the imagination who brings tears of recognition or a side-ache from laughter. Bonnie Meltzer creates visions of rivers, ideally one without coal tarnishing its glimmer and with healthy wild salmon runs. All this in the beautiful space at NASCC.
Music is composed by Brent Lawrence, Jack Gabel, Jennifer Wright, Liz Nedela, Dawn Sonntag and Theresa Koon.
Performers are Grace Skinner, Dawn Sonntag and Nicholas Meyer, voice; Jesse McCann guitar; Andrew Erlich, Julie Asparro and Collin Oldham, strings; Laura Kuhlman, Danielle Goldman, Justin Bulava, woodwinds; Brett Paschal and Paul Owen, percussion.
