2018 LHAAFF 1 - Opening Night
Opening night features a delightful selection of short films designed to celebrate the power and brilliance of Black people. Join us for a night of provocative ideas, each carefully crafted and  featuring a lively post screening discussion with filmmakers in attendance.

Shea Buttah  Dir. Deja Gordon  8 mins
Shea Buttah is an ode to the experience of a black female's life from childhood to womanhood with one speechless protagonist.

Straight Line  Dir. Carl Harrison  15 mins
Inspired by the true story of legendary musician Sam Cooke and the incident that birthed "A Change Is Gonna Come," Straight Line follows a band of young black musicians known as "Lost Identity. When they travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to perform at a local barbecue joint, none of them are quite prepared for the way the night unfolds. Straight Line tells a story of friendship, love, and resilience -- even in the face of injustice.

AJE IJO: '7 Reflections'  Dir. Kiana Harris   13 mins
AJE IJO Short Dance Film Series centers the humanity, resiliency, vulnerability of black & african diasporic people [of all genders], interrogating the western gender binary and interrupting accompanying notions of masculinity and femininity. Our individual and collective complexity, survival, thriving, and ultimately our healing as a people are at stake, and compel the elaboration of this narrative. To this end, the lm elicits elements of spiritual cosmologies of the african diaspora, particularly those that emerge from the Yoruba divine consciousness, Ifa, and the Orisa (deities) that comprise it. Local Filmmaker Kiana Harris in attendance

SHE   Dir. Anthonia Onyejekwe  14 mins
"She" follows Tanesh Nutall, a 50-year old black transgender woman from Rahway, New Jersey. In February 2016, Tanesh was confronted by a city employee for using a women's restroom in Downtown San Francisco. Throughout the film, Tanesh seeks justice and make amends with family members that were not accepting of her gender identity.  Not only does "She" discuss queer people in urban spaces but one's ability to accept themselves despite the odds against them.

Undefined: A Muslim-American Musical   Dir. Amatullah'Muhyi  Ali  26 mins
Amina Rasul wants to hide every aspect of being a minority as best she can. With the help of her grandmother and two Muslim sisters, Amina is able to redefine her look and represent her culture and religion with confidence.

Untamed Tongue  Dir. Lance Newton  8 mins
Untamed Tongue is a reaction piece to social injustice and how the black citizen's image has been misshapen into one of criminality.

Burning Angel Dust  Dir. Jackie Stone  12 mins
A Nigerienne immigrant struggles to adapt to American life while preserving cultural customs for her westernized children. Mimi's 10-year-old daughter Violet is excited about her coming of age celebration, but it turns out to be far more life-altering than she could ever imagine. There's a price to keep traditions alive.
