FEMA Flood Maps: What's New? What's Changed?

FEMAs new flood maps are rolling out, the first updates to the Low Country since 2004. Some people are moved out of flood zones, while others are moved into flood zones. Its important to understand how these revisited flood zones and new maps affect building and zoning codes, and insurance.
Mr. Carl Simmons, Director of Charleston County Building Inspection Services, will present an overview of the changes, and how they might affect design, engineering and construction industry in the Low Country. Mr. Simmons is the expert! A Certified Building Official for over thirty years, he became a Certified Floodplain Manager in 2004. He has forty years of experience including flood-related issues and development, urban and coastal development, construction, and coastal codes and standards.
Learning Objectives:
Introduction to the new flood maps, technological innovations in mapping capabilities, review of new flood zone/ discussion of LIMWA line.
Explanation of the appeal process; adoption of new maps and when they will go in to effect.
Overview of floodplain management in the Charleston area.
Technical discussion on mitigation efforts, both small and large, that can prevent future flood damage and possibly reduce in flood insurance rates.
