COMMUNITY DIALOGUE CIRCLE
CAN'T WE TALK? An Experiment in Conversation, Contemplation, and our Search for Common Ground on the issues that separate us!
The Hasidic rebbe, Nahman of Bratzlav, once said, "The dead must be amused when people bewail them, as if to say it were better if you lived longer and suffered more!"
Although death comes to us all, how we die is a perennial topic among the living. Do we want to utilize all available medical interventions or do we want to use Washington's 'Death with Dignity' route? Home or hospice or hospital? Exit stage right or exit stage left--the result is the same--or is it? What do your core values teach you about dying and how do they inform the plans you make for yourself or your loved ones?
At our third session, we will use the dyad dialogue model to discuss the topic of how we die. As in previous sessions, this will be a forum where all perspectives are welcome, where you experience being accepted and respected. Where, by the same token, everyone else feels they are being heard, seen and loved.
This session will be the first time we will use our acquired communication skills and practices to tackle a potentially controversial subject, one that is personal, ethical/religious and political. We will see if, by drawing on our personal core values and religious/spiritual traditions for wisdom, we can improve the way we engage each other on topical issues and help us avoid the polarization that is so prevalent today in our families, communities, and in the public square.
Please come prepared by reviewing whatever materials you choose that help inform your thinking on end of life issues. You need not have participated in the previous sessions to join us for this one.
This Series will culminate in presentation of an effective and replicable model for civil discourse at a Town Hall Forum on August 4, 2018.
