Événement

Kaz George & Sami Stevens
Sami and Kaz have been making music together since they met at The New England Conservatory in 2011. For the past two years they have been developing music for a new project: Sami Stevens & The Man I Love, an original Soul/RnB band based in Brooklyn, NY. The band is currently mixing their first album, which they recorded with Somerbridge Music at Dimension Sound Studio. Sami and Kaz are also working on a currently unreleased EP of songs produced by Kaz under the name KG,B and sung by Sami. For this event, they bring their musical ideas together for a tour of the Bay Area, accompanied by a crew of local musicians, combining their unique influences to create their own brand of Jazz, RnB, and Soul.

Sami

Vocalist Sami Stevens identifies as a Jazz singer with a deep love for Soul. Hailing originally from the woods of East Winthrop, Maine, Sami has performed with world renowned jazz pianist Jason Moran and 6-time Grammy nominee Fred Hersch, and opened for Grammy nominated folk singer Greg Brown, and acclaimed Black Star rapper Talib Kweli. Sami has sung at NYC venues Webster Hall, Rockwood Music Hall, Brooklyn Bowl and the Bitter End, Bostons Jordan Hall and Downstairs at the Middle East, and Paris venues Duc Des Lombards and Caveau de la Houchette. She has led the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, and sang the national anthem in Fenway Park at age 16.

Sami's latest project is Her All-Star Band, which she started in the summer of 2015, playing music inspired by modern RnB, classic soul, and modern jazz. Sami is also lead vocalist for the widely celebrated faux Italian 70s soundtrack band Tredici Bacci. In 2014, she released the Melting EP, a collection of original music written for strings, drums and voice.

Sami studied privately with Dominique Eade, Kate McGarry, John McNeil, and Jeanie Lovetri. She graduated from the New England Conservatory of music with a BM in Vocal Jazz Performance and from Tufts University with a BA in Psychology in the fall of 2014. She is currently living in Brooklyn, NY.

Kaz

Kazemde George is a Saxophonist with a unique brand of improvised music that incorporates his many musical influences. Kaz originally hails from the Bay Area, where he studied Jazz with mentors such as Charles McNeal, and Khalil Shaheed through the Oaktown Jazz Workshops. While studying to receive his bachelors in Neurobiology from Harvard University, he continued his study of music through the New England Conservatory, eventually receiving his masters in Jazz Composition in 2013. While at NEC, Kaz studied with Jerry Bergonzi, Cecil McBee, Donny McCaslin, John McNeil, Jason Moran, Danilo Pérez, and Miguel Zenón. He currently lives and works as a musician and educator in New York City.

In 2012, Kaz began a 10-month George Peabody Gardner Fellowship in La Habana, Cuba, where he studied Congas, performed around the island, and learned about many styles of Cuban music like Rumba, Changui, Timba, and Son. In addition, Kazemde is a prolific Hip-Hop Beat-Maker, making electronic music inspired by producers such as J Dilla, and Madlib. He also has a passion for Brazilian styles such as Bossa Nova, Samba, Pagode, and Choros.

Kazemde's improvisations and compositions draw from all of these disparate traditions, but seek to find the connections between them all.
