Revolutionary War Hideouts Two Hikes through History
When: - Claudius Smiths Den (Harriman State Park) - Horse Stable Rock (Ramapo)
Where: Meeting place will be provided with confirmed reservation
Price: $15/person (single hike); $25/person (both hikes). Price includes guided hike and a book about Rockland in the Revolutionary War. Pre-paid reservations are required.
Claudius Smith, the "Cowboy of the Ramapos, led a Loyalist gang during the Revolutionary War that stole horses and cattle and sold them to British troops; robbed local Patriots' homes; and ambushed travelers in the Ramapo Valley "no-man's land" from Tuxedo to Suffern. In this pair of hikes, we visit two mountain lairs to which the gang is believed to have retreated after raiding the communities below.
* On Saturday, March 3, we will hike to Claudius Smiths Den (Harriman State Park), a large, horizontal rock shelter on the Tuxedo-Rockland border that served as a hideout for Claudius Smith and his gang. This hike will take approximately 33.5 hours and has steep sections.
* On Saturday, March 10, we will hike to Horse Stable Rock (Ramapo). Atop Horse Stable Mountain, with spectacular views, this site was also a hideout and lookout point. It was given the name because the gang would drive horses and other livestock there after raiding parties on the farms and communities below. Legend says that Claudius hid treasure in the area made up of stolen gold and silver. This hike will take approximately 22.5 hour; it also has steep sections.
Both hikes are rated moderate to strenuous. Participants should be in relatively good shape and wear sturdy hiking footwear. Bring water and lunch or snacks.
